Get kids to know each other’s names
Get kids to know each other’s likes and dislikes
Students learn to communicate efficiently
Students are assessed for deeper answers
Students learn Frayer model note-taking
Students learn to provide multiple correct answers
Teacher: BIG IDEAS
Emphasize having four facts
on EACH category
Art doesn’t count as much as IDEAS
Focus on moving around the room
Teach students to speak at
appropriate levels
Give students specific times for
each activity - teach them to finish
Step 1:
Show students Frayer model examples
Step 3:
Photo copy the next slide,
back to back

Have kids fill out the Frayer
model note-taking on a friend

Smart Start Mini Mixer - Friend frayer

  • 1. Smart School Start 2014 Academic Mini-Mixer Frayer a classmate Estimated time: 20 minutes
  • 2. Academic Goals Culture Goals Get kids to know each other’s names Get kids to know each other’s likes and dislikes Students learn to communicate efficiently Students are assessed for deeper answers Students learn Frayer model note-taking Students learn to provide multiple correct answers
  • 3. Teacher: BIG IDEAS Emphasize having four facts on EACH category Art doesn’t count as much as IDEAS Focus on moving around the room Teach students to speak at appropriate levels Give students specific times for each activity - teach them to finish
  • 4. Step 1: Show students Frayer model examples

  • 8. Step 3: Photo copy the next slide, back to back ! Have kids fill out the Frayer model note-taking on a friend ! Then, they share out
  • 9. Frayer a Classmate Name Describe your classmate (what do they look like?): 1 ! 2 ! 3 ! 4 1 ! 2 ! 3 ! 4 What are 4 things they like? (food, teams, movies, bands) What are 4 things they do not like? 1 ! 2 ! 3 ! 4 Draw a picture of their pet or dream pet, based on their description:
  • 10. Step 5: Ideas for connecting ! • Have kids form groups based on likes ! • Have kids reform groups based on dislikes ! • Have kids vote on the favorite picture in each group 
 • Have all students share to the group, but make it a “light” experience
