This document discusses open notebook science, which aims to make the entire scientific process transparent by publishing preliminary data, failed experiments, and lab notebooks online in addition to traditional publications. It notes issues with the current closed system like difficulty finding solubility data and controversies that arose. Open notebook science could help address these problems by crowdsourcing data collection and allowing other researchers to build on and verify past work more easily. However, traditional peer review and metrics may need to evolve to fully recognize open notebook science contributions to scholarship.
