Welcome!
• Jeremy Brown – jbrown@sd43.bc.ca
• On Twitter @jbsd43
• Science Teacher and Digital Immersion (DI)
Coordinator at Riverside Secondary
• Designed and Implemented the DI program
and the 1 to 1 iPad project.
• 1350 students & 80
teachers
• South side of Port
Coquitlam
• Mixed population with
very low to middle
socio-economic families
• Most of our technology
has come in house with
some coming through
SD43’s TLI project.
• Most students bring
tech from home but we
have some devices to
share.
• Strong Leadership over
the past 9 years
• The last 2 principals
have gone on to senior
leadership roles in
Vancouver and West
Van.
• Strong staff
commitment to
become the district
leaders in technology.
Technology Programs
• Digital Immersion 9-10
• Learning with Technology
• Science Coop
• Cisco Networking
• Digital Media Classes
• Traditional ICT courses
• Blended Classrooms
• Connected School
• Positive Student Digital
Footprint
• Digital Citizens
• Environments where
Higher Order Thinking
Skills (HOTS) are routinely
Money

Connecting to the Internet
• Do you want to use the internet?
• How will the internet improve your
practice?
• Does your school have Wi-Fi? How many
connections can it hold at one time?
• Are your students able to bring in devices
with data plans?
• What about texting? – Polleverywhere?
Devices - Teachers
• Want vs. Need
• Laptops vs. Tablet
computers
• Single User Devices

– Samsung Android Tablets
(Galaxy Note 10.1)
– Windows RT Machines
Want Need
Devices - Students
• What works best for kids?
• Laptops vs. Tablets vs. Phones
Keeping Connected
• What do you want from
a connected classroom?
• Where is your comfort
level?
• What happens when
you lose connection?
• What happens when
students access
inappropriate content?
Software - Students

Management
• How do you manage
content?
• Do you want to?
• Where do students
hand work into you?
• How do you give
instant feedback?
What do you have/need/want
Worksheet
Passion
ExpertiseSupport
What makes a good technology teacher?
• Passion + Perseverance +
Planning
• Notice how I didn’t say
knowledgeable?
• You need a base level of
knowledge but you can’t
know everything
• You can’t be afraid to ask
the students for help!
Professional Development
• Start in your school…
• You have experts…they just might be the
students!
• Join and Participate in a Webinar like
Classroom 2.0
• Social Media and Personal Learning Networks
Social Media and PLNs
• I believe that Twitter is
the greatest Pro-D
resource available to
you.
• #edtechbc, #edchat,
#cpchat
• Set up a connected
environment within
your schools and
between schools.
#rside43
• Teaching by Design was the original framework we
used for setting up the new courses and adapting
the others.
• Digital Fluencies were put into place this last year
to propel us forward
Framework
What students work well in these
environments?
• Creative
• Innovative
• Independent
• Collaborative
• Decisive
• Critical Consumers
• Students with written output.
What do you want to accomplish?
Project Based Learning
• Technology and Project based learning fit
• Mastery Projects, Digital Backpacks, Passion Projects,
etc…
• Subject Specific projects – How can you leverage
technology to make the projects you already do
better?

Editor's Notes

  1. You do get increased engagement.Attendance in my DI class in near perfect. Even when a kid is sick at home, we get them to Skype in so they don’t miss the class.
  2. You will be miserable for the first few monthsImagine the payoffs
  3. Build a capacity for patience within yourself and your studentsDon’t throw your hands in the air every time you have something go awry
