As companies look to strategies like DevOps to automate and industrialize the SDLC, what does that mean, if nobody can really claim "I've been doing that for years!" Ask any IT recruiter and you will get a different answer, but certainly there is more to it than putting something in a cloud, or coding Chef or Puppet recipes.

Agile software development methodologies are inherently adaptable. This inherent flexibility is a result of the fourth principle on the Agile Manifesto: responding to change over following a plan -- even if your plan is to follow Agile. Following this principle, however, is easier said than done, for two reasons. First, adapting Agile calls for an iconoclastic approach to software development, which goes against the dogmatic Agilists. Second, "responding to change" may or may not lead to better outcomes. In fact, in many cases, too much responsiveness to change takes the entire effort off the rails. The solution is to place the Agile development effort into an architectural context that supports the agility drivers of the organization while maintaining a coherent context for the software development project. This context includes the organization, its processes, the technology, and the information at the core.

The Cloud has transformed how we think about software quality. Instead of preventing failures, we must focus on automatic recovery from failure. In other words, resilience trumps traditional quality measures. Continuous delivery models further squeeze traditional notions of quality. Remember the venerable project management Iron Triangle? Among time, scope, and cost, you can only fix two or quality will suffer. Only in today's DevOps world, continuous testing, integration, and deployment upend the time metric, the DevOps cadence reinvents project scope, and cost metrics expand past software development to the total cost of ownership of the end-to-end digital initiative. It's time to discard the Iron Triangle and reinvent it for today's digital world. We have huge quantities of Big Data about customer preferences and behavior pouring in every minute, and no end of fancy tools for analyzing those data. And yet, for every Sony Walkman or Apple iPad to rapidly dominate its respective sui generis market, there are hundreds of less successful innovations piled up in the bargain bins at the Dollar Store. With all these Big Data, then, why aren't we that much better at innovating? The answer: data analysis is much better suited for optimization than innovation. As we leverage data to get better and better at marketing, carving out a percent of market share here and a percent of conversion there, we're actually making decisions that end up stifling innovation. Our incessant march toward "better-faster-cheaper" is actually making us more brittle, not more innovative. In fact, innovation depends more upon disruption than optimization. Disruption -- both internal and external -- can lead to periods of intense creativity and intuition. And yet, without data-driven optimization, disruption-driven innovation is nothing more than a crapshoot. Leveraging data to properly balance optimization and disruption, therefore, is essential for achieving market-leading levels of innovation.

Organizations have numerous, disparate ways of leveraging IT to automate or otherwise support the variety of business processes that constitute the operation of the business, typically focused on achieving business outcomes through continual optimization. But when the organization seeks to be innovative, the story gets tricky when they treat innovation itself as a set of business processes. Innovation requires disruption, thus requiring a different management approach from traditional BPM-friendly "better-faster-cheaper" management techniques that drive optimization but limit innovation and resilience. As a result, we're faced with the dilemma: invest heavily in custom integration to govern all our processes, thus sacrificing the agility drivers of innovation and resilience, or govern many of the processes manually in a piecemeal fashion, risking holes in our compliance. The answer: cross-process governance that leverages dynamic constraint satisfaction. Implement technology that is able to interpret and apply diverse metadata across the organization, including policies, rules, and other governance-related information, maintaining compliance "on the edges," while disruptive innovation takes place as needed across the organization.

Change is fundamental to Agile Architecture. If it’s not the business and their requirements, processes, policies, or metadata that change, it’s the underlying technologies, implementations, and schemas that do. The enterprise is constantly shifting. The more that we can enable change without having a high penalty cost for that change, the more we enable business agility. Getting things right at the start isn't an appropriate goal for an Agile Architecture effort. In fact, the goal might be just the reverse — build capabilities that you know won’t be right and then make sure the architecture enables you to change them without breaking anything. As a result, there’s no point to trying to get all the software right, and then locking everything down so that nothing can change. Instead, focus on failing your way to success. When things keep changing, there’s no way you can always be right. So fail often to succeed sooner. And to do that, you need to reduce the cost of failure. But clearly, any technology you deploy has to work, otherwise it’s not meeting any business requirements. Building software that works is a fundamental Agile principle to be sure. How can you build for failure while building software that works? Agile Architecture solves this contradiction. Instead of making failure expensive, focus on reducing its costs. To deal with continual change, Agile Architecture enables agility through the abstraction of IT capabilities so that your system allows for ambiguity. Design your system for flexibility by working at a level of abstraction that treats change as a constant.

Those large binders filled with perforated pages striped in green and white may be long gone, but the batch job – paper report – human decision pattern remains engrained on our managerial consciousness, for better or worse. Fortunately, this perception is changing. Real-time analytics technology is now a reality. However, even real-time analytics ends with a human decision, not with an automated decision leading to an action that changes the data in real-time. Once we establish a fully automated feedback loop, then we take this final remaining bottleneck out of the equation, unleashing a new level of speed and performance. Taking out this bottleneck is absolutely essential as we move from real-time analytics to streaming analytics. Rising to this challenge is cognitive computing – a way of analyzing streaming data that are multistructured, ambiguous, and in a constant state of flux. The advantages are profound. Fraud detection and prevention, dynamic product pricing, Internet-of-Things (IoT) data analysis, electronic trading, customer promotion triggering, and compliance monitoring are some of the early examples of the power of streaming analytics – bolstered by cognitive computing to establish real-time, machine learning-based feedback loops that drive business value with no bottlenecks. In order to play at this new level, however, we must learn new skills. Just as we’re struggling to move from batch job/report/decision thinking to real-time thinking, we must now take the next step: working with never-ending torrents of multistructured, dynamic data.

Streaming Analytics and Cognitive Computing - Changing the Game

As enterprises around the world struggle with their digital transformation efforts, many are finding that innovative digital teams are moving much faster than their hidebound IT organizations. Rather than struggling to convince traditional IT to get with the digital program, executives are taking advice from IT research firm Gartner, and encouraging existing IT to continue in their desultory ways. However, many CIOs are realizing the dangers of following Gartner’s advice. The central challenge with bimodal IT is that it encourages IT management to shift their transformation efforts away from 'slow' IT to 'fast' digital efforts. Such bimodality is a recipe for disaster, as transformation efforts must be end-to-end. We’ve all been there: on our lunch hour we surreptitiously visit our favorite My Little Pony fan site. Now that virtualization is a must-have across all modern IT shops, data center operations require comprehensive, real-time insights in order to manage these high-performance production environments. First-generation operational analytics tools fall short. They are based on static or some form of dynamic thresholds derived from trending and averaging analytical approaches. But in today’s dynamic, high-velocity environments, false positives are far too common and important information is lost in the noise. Next generation analytic tools should leverage self-learning models powered by machine learning in order to deliver personalized, faster, more accurate operational insights. While some emerging tools are leveraging self-learning models to identify the anomalies in the individual object behaviors based on reported statistics.
