1. Health Tourism
Malaysia has gained reputation as one of the most preferred locations for healthcare tourism by virtue of
its highly efficient medical staff and modern healthcare facilities. Medical expertise in Malaysia is on par
with the western countries and most private hospitals in the country have internationally recognised
quality standards. All private medical centres are approved and licensed by the Ministry of Health and
are required to maintain stringent quality standards.
People from around the world visit Malaysia for healthcare tourism and avail themselves to high quality
medical treatment in some of the best healthcare facilities in the country. Healthcare tourism in
Malaysia has been patronised by tourists seeking critical medical treatments as well as by people in need
of cosmetic and preventive care. Malaysia offers several advantages in terms of being a healthcare
tourism destination.
Advantages at a Glance
Medical Facilities at Competitive Prices
Medical services and healthcare facilities are available at very competitive prices compared to countries
like the UK and US. Healthcare tourism packages offer medical tourists top notch medical facilities at
affordable prices.
Healthcare Facilities
Most private hospitals and healthcare facilities are well-equipped with the amenities of today’s
technology. Medical centres have extensive diagnostic and therapeutic resources such as haemodialysis
centres, endoscopic suites, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cardiac catheterisation facilities and
much more.
Highly Qualified Medical Professionals
Most hospitals and healthcare facilities are staffed by well-experienced and highly qualified English
speaking medical professionals with extensive international qualifications and are supported by an
equally efficient group of English-speaking paramedic staff.
2. Affordable and Easy Accommodation
Most private hospitals in Malaysia offer accommodation to the parents, ranging from comfortable rooms
to luxurious suites with full-time nurses. Sleep-in facilities for patients’ travelling companions are also
provided by some hospitals. The cost of accommodation is reasonable and that allows most foreign
patients to avail themselves to luxurious suites. They can also arrange comfortable accommodation for
their travelling partners.
Tourism – The Best Part of Healthcare Tourism in Malaysia
Malaysia is a tourist’s haven and it is no exception for patients coming for healthcare tourism. Patients
get ample opportunities to enjoy the beaches or go sightseeing and participate in other tourism activities
during their recuperation. While patients that need less critical care can enjoy an exhilarating tourism
experience, Malaysia also offers enough opportunities for critically-ill patients to take leisurely vacations
on the quiet beaches. Having an extensive tour of Malaysia not just provides as an enriching experience
but also actively contributes to the patient’s recovery process.
Did You Know?
According to the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia (APHM), the figures have tripled in terms of
the number of tourists coming to Malaysia for medical tourism since 2003. In 2007, the figure was
341,288. This figure represents RM253.84 million in medical tourism receipts for 2007.
282,000 foreigners visited Malaysia for medical treatment during the first nine months of 2008 where the
revenue totalled in RM222.25 million. This is a 16 percent increase from the year before.
APHM, however, predicts that there will be less foreigners visiting Malaysia for medical tourism this year,
especially for aesthetic purposes such as plastic surgery. Nevertheless, experts still believe that the
health tourism industry in Malaysia will remain strong in the long run despite the global economic
recession.
