Stressors
• Stressors are any stimulus that
produces a stress response.
– A person

An object
– A place
–
An event
A stressor can vary from one person to the next.
4. Kinds of Stressors
• Biological- Comes from a biochemical imbalance,
mental or physical illness
• Environmental- Such as poverty, pollution,
crowding noise, natural disasters
• Cognitive- The way you perceive a situation
• Personal behavior- Negative reaction in the body or
mind caused by using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs,
or not exercising
• Life situation- Dealing with life’s ups and downs
5. Stages of Stress on the Body
• Stage 1
–
Alarm
• Is the stress response, when the body goes on high alert.
• Adrenaline,”emergency hormone” is secreted by the adrenal
glands to prepare the body to respond to the stressor.
• Fight or flight mode
6. Stage 2
• Resistance
– When the body tries to repair its damage from the
stressful event and return to normal.
– Physical resistance to the stressor reaches its peak.
This is why people involved in extremely high stress
situations have been known to accomplish
incredible feats of strength.
– If the stage continues for too long, both body and
mind may show ill effects.
