1. Another advantage of concrete is its smoothness, which is the number one issue to highway and road users, according to studies conducted by the Federal Highway Administration. 2. Smoother roads last longer -- and concrete stays smoothest for the longest period of time. While there are sophisticated tests and instruments used to measure smoothness, one of the most telling is the “seat-o-meter” -- that built in device which all drivers use to gauge the bumps, vibration and noise of a poor driving surface. 3. This improved fuel efficiency is based on the rigidity of the concrete pavement, which provides a better “rolling” surface. The difference between a truck moving on concrete versus a flexible pavement is comparable to bowling on a hardwood floor versus a carpet. 4. Just how smooth is concrete? Concrete pavements all over the country are meeting and exceeding smoothness requirements established by state Departments of Transportation. The reconstructed concrete pavement on the Thruway near Rochester is a prime example where smoothness achieved exceeded expectations. The contractor built a pavement twice as smooth as the minimum requirements of the Thruway.
