26. The working adventure with Banana Shire Council (BSC) is one
of the most exciting and thrilling experiences that develops an
individual both personally and professionally.
It’s a gateway to embrace the colossal work network, the broad
spectrum of opportunities and sometimes a haven wherein long
lasting friendships are formed. I know for many, the first step into a
professional workplace can be extremely daunting and filled with a
lot of trepidation.
Personally, for me here at BSC I was made to feel welcome from
day one; the entire Council staff was a group of friendly, extremely
down to Earth people I had ever come across. I think what made
work so special for me here is that it has both the scope to
challenge the young and experienced minds and the team of diverse
individuals, especially your team members who you come to bond so
closely with.
The training range, close expertise mentorship and supportive
culture make it an ideal environment to open your ideas and relate
with like minded professionals and external clients. Travelling to
various locations around the shire, you will be given the opportunity
tackle abundant projects that will expand your skill set and future
possibilities.
As a graduate Engineer, the combined experience of design and
site work allowed me to extend my thought process to witness the
full cycle of a project.
I consider my association with the Council as one of the most
rewarding and pleasurable career experiences and strongly
recommend it to anyone looking to expand their horizon with the
vast versatility Banana Shire Council has to offe r.

Manager Planning and Strategy
The Banana Shire Council has modern Council offices and facilities. New
administration building was constructed in 2012.
Council staff are friendly and productive. You will find that in smaller local governments
like Banana Shire, the door will always be held open for you and you are always greeted
in the hall way / lunch room.
Customer service staff are highly efficient, helpful and professional in their approach.
Human Resources staff are highly efficient, helpful and professional in their approach.
The HR team go that extra step and ensure new staff are welcome and settle into their
positions and town.
Living and working in the Banana Shire provides fantastic recreational and social
opportunities as well as having reasonable rents, house prices and access to services.
The “small country town vibe” is what attracted me to Banana, notably “A local called
out ‘god bless you’ when I sneezed whilst driving down the main street of Biloela”.
28. Michael Buckley
Parks Advisor
I spent 10 years in Private enterprise prior to starting a job with Council
admittedly starting with a lot of misguided assumptions of what it would be
like.
Twelve years on that job for me has turned into a career due to Local
Governments positive approach to training and personal development
coupled with gaining valuable skills and experience working with diverse
teams at all levels.
Qualifications and experience gained within Local Government is very
transferable from Council to Council offering many avenues for multiple
29. I started at Council 6 years ago as a Coordinator
for the Infrastructure (Works) department. In the
early part of my working career my skill base was as a
finance manager but since been with council my skills
have diversified to assisting staff on Road Projects,
Budgets and Funding Grants within the
Infrastructure Section.
Council has encouraged staff to attend training and
seminars to assist employees in the workforce. I have
attended different training for Project Management
Contract Administration Workplace Investigations
and Work Place Health and Safety Training and
many other training opportunities to better my
career opportunities.
Di Corfield
Senior Procurement &
Contracts Advisor
With Council investing this training my new skills has
allowed my career path move to a different section at
council in the Contracts and Procurement area.
Working at Banana Shire Council has been a
rewarding experience and has allowed my career to
now diversify to a new skills and opportunities.
30. Diana Rivera
QA Officer
“The workforce within the Council is a team of talented people who manage
to create a friendly and welcoming environment. In my past three years
working for Banana Shire Council I have found the various positions I have
held within the organisation to be both challenging and rewarding and have
allowed me to learn a great deal and develop a number of new skills.
I am proud of what I have achieved both professionally and socially and
look forward to my future with Council ”

Our team is located in our Admin Office in Biloela with one located in Taroom at the southern end of the Shire.
We operate our HR services in a business partnership model and found this to be a very successful strategy in forging professional relationships with our 5 Departments.
Now let me take you on a tour of our Council area and its great diversity and natural attactions it has to offer.
Where is the world is Banana Shire?
It is based in Central Qld Australia, 1.5 hrs south of Rockampton and 1.5 hrs south west of Gladstone. It is approximately 6.5 hrs drive from Brisbane.

Biloela is the Aboriginal word for White Cuckatoo of which we have vast flocks that fly across our countryside.
Banana Shire was named after the town of Banana which got its name from a “famous bull called “Banana”
Our towns or villages are steep in history.
The village of Cracow was a booming gold mining town in the 1930’s with a population over 20,000
Today the population is slightly smaller, the gold mine operates but0 on a smaller basis.
However the town’s famous pub still exits and it is worth a drive to have a refreshing drink in the bar and check out the visual stourues that exit there.
The region has a diverse and stable primary industry.
Beef, wheat, cotton, lucerne sorgcome, across length and breath of Shire.
Also have a meat works located on the outskirts of Biloela, with saleyards located at Taroom
Callide Mine services coals to the Callide Power station located on the outskirts of Biloela
Other Mines are located at Moura abd Baralaba.
Natural gaslines running through the Shire area from the Surat basin to Gladstone have just recently completed construction.
Lots of lovely parks for everyone to enjoy.
The whole of Shire provides wonderful facilities for camping and caravans.
Child Care facilities
Great recretion and sporting facilities with over 470 sporting and community groups across the whole of Banana Shire.
Bilo has a PYCY
Markets at all the villages on a regular basis
Celebration Days and Sporting Events such as the Moura Fishing Competition
Annual Rural and Country Shows that are truly the heart and soul of show casing the variety of industry and products the Shire has to offer.
Abound the National Parks, camping areas and walking tracks.
For the birds watchers, or if flora is more your thing, then the Shire will not disappoint you.
