The strategies for La Spezia to achieve its objectives
focused on ways of improving existing infrastructure,
targeting a wider group of users, and harnessing the
potential for leisure and tourism uses. Key principles
include:
• growing into a knowledge-based economy with an
emphasis on innovative sustainable technologies
• recognising the harbour as an asset, not a barrier,
and promoting connectivity with Nervi, Porto
Venere, and Cinque Terre with a solar powered
public transport network
• identifying underutilised harbour sites that can be
redeveloped into mixed use, compact, and high
quality places
• generating a wide range of tourism and leisure
activities for residents as well as visitors
• demonstrating clean technologies for regeneration
which in itself could showcase the city’s new

The value assigned to the forested and steep
topographic nature of the site has meant it necessary
to minimise building footprints and circulation routes;
maximising building efficiency whilst avoiding cutting
into the natural contours of the landscape.
An estimated 70% of the natural landscape has
remained untouched, creating a legacy of parkland; a
unique resource for the well-being of its inhabitants. A
network of sensitive routes allows cycling and walking
deep into the hilly landscape where follies provide
places for study, meeting and contemplation. Equally
students may choose to reflect upon the landscape
from within the more formal arrangements of the
courtyards.
The integration of buildings within the unique
landscape respects the harmonious relationship
between man and nature providing visually rich setting
for learning and inspiration.
