- The Ancient Olympic Games started in 776 B.C. That is about 2784 years ago. It was part of a religious festival to honour Zeus the chief Greek God and was organised every 4 years. There was a Sacred truce – this means that the war would stop temporarily for the Olympic games. This ritual of the Olympic Games was followed strictly by all the neighbouring countries. - This is the map of area where the first Olympic Games took place. (Click to animate. Facilitator to get responses from pupils before giving the answers) Q1. Where do you think the first recorded Olympic Games was? A1. The first recorded Olympic Games in history was in Olympia. Q2. In which country is Olympia? A2. It is in Greece.
- The ancient Greek people had beautiful architecture, sculpture and art. From art that was found on pottery as shown on the slide, we learnt about the sports held at the Ancient Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games included events like running, chariot racing, boxing and pentathlon. Only men were allowed to participate and watch the games.
- The Ancient Games were celebrated until 393 AD. When the Romans conquered Greece, they stopped the games.
- Now that I have given all of us a quick introduction on the ancient Olympic Games, we shall take a look at the modern Olympic Games. (Click to animate)
- The modern Olympic Games was founded by a person named Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He was a Frenchman, born in Paris in 1863. Coubertin, whose father was an artist and mother a musician, was raised in cultivated and aristocratic surroundings. He had always been deeply interested in questions of education. For him, education was the key to the future of society, and he realised that through sports, he could help to change the old-fashioned and unimaginative education system then. On 23 June, 1894 he founded the International Olympic Committee in a ceremony held at the University of Sorbonne in Paris and two years later, in 1896, the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in Athens. On that occasion Coubertin was elected the second president of the IOC and he remained president until 1925.

- Let’s find out more about the modern Olympics Games. The Olympics Games are an international sports competitions for 26 different sports. They are held every 4 years and there are the summer and the winter games which are held 2 years apart. However the Olympics are more than that. They provide an opportunity for all nations to put aside their differences and come together in peace and friendship through sports.
- (Click to animate) To remind everyone of where the Olympic Games began, the first modern Olympic Games was held in the ancient Pan-Athenian stadium in Greece. Since then, the Games have been hosted by other countries. The Games are open to participants from all over the world. The Games last for 16 days. Women are allowed to participate in almost every sport.
- Remember the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008? It was the 29th Olympic Games. I believe you would have watched a few sports in action on TV last year. Let’s feel a little of the experience and the amount of effort these athletes put in during the Games. Are you inspired by these athletes?
- Now that we’ve found out about the ancient and modern Olympic Games, let’s see if you remember what you learnt about the Youth Olympic Games.
