FaceTag is a working prototype of a semantic collaborative tagging tool conceived for bookmarking information architecture resources. It aims to show how the widespread homogeneous and flat keywords' space created by users while tagging can be effectively mixed with a richer faceted classification scheme to improve the �information scent� and �berrypicking� capabilities of the system. The additional semantic structure is aggregated both implicitly observing user behaviour and explicitly introducing a compelling user experience that facilitates the end-user creation of relationships between tags. FaceTag current implementation is written in PHP / SQL and includes an open API which allows querying and integration from other applications.

Social tagging has been recognized as an important solution to the description of resources available on the Web. In the context of e-learning it is presented as an auxiliary mechanism to the composition of learning object metadata. This article aims to present the results of a study on the state of the art of works related to social tagging and learning objects, promoting a discussion about the main elements related to the concepts.

Web based learning often involves exploration of the information space similar to the exploration of space in the real world. Initial paths taken in a novel physical or virtual environment will not only guide the discoveries of what the environment contains, but also formulate the underlying organising principles. The suggested route in a museum frequently presents artworks that are either chronological or conceptually tied together. Deviating from this –and taking a route of our own– might be either confusing or insightful. The structure of presenting the information and the control that the learners have in exploring it, plays a major role in determining mental representations and meaning. In the virtual world these possibilities and degrees of freedom in navigation are not constrained like the physical world, thus, can be colossal. The question that arises is what are the gains and losses of allowing the learners to freely control their explorations in an information space? To investigate this, we designed three web based learning environments that differed in their navigational structure, but not in their content. The first environment (Linear) was strictly sequential and did not allow any alternation from a defined sequence of the pages. With this Linear structure, the learners had almost no control over their navigation as they could only continue to the next page in the sequence or go back to the previous page. The second environment (Star) partially restricted control by connecting the webpages through a central homepage. The third environment (Interconnected) gave full navigational control to the participants, as every webpage was accessible from each of the other webpages. Detailed navigational behaviour was recorded and learning efficiency was measured. Participants answered the same questions immediately after learning and also after a period of two weeks in order to evaluate both short and long term learning outcomes. In this paper, we describe and interpret the results from the experiment with special focus on how control in web based learning enhances efficiency in one case; while hinders performance in others.

GIVING THE LEARNERS CONTROL OF NAVIGATION: COGNITIVE GAINS AND LOSSES

The semantics of heritage data is a growing area of interest with ontologies such as the CIDOC-CRM providing semantic frameworks and exemplary projects such as STAR and STELLAR demonstrating what can be done using semantic technologies applied to archaeological resources. In the world of the Semantic Web, advances regarding geosemantics have emerged to extend research more fully into the spatio-temporal domain, for example extending the SPARQL standard to produce GeoSPARQL. Importantly, the use of semantic technologies, particularly the structure of RDF, aligns with graph and network based approaches, providing a rich fusion of techniques for geospatial analysis of heritage data expressed in such a manner. This paper gives an overview of the ongoing G-STAR research project (GeoSemantic Technologies for Archaeological Resources) with reference to broader sectoral links particularly to commercial archaeology. Particular attention is paid to examining the integration of spatial data into the heritage Global Graph and the relationship between Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and Linked Data, moving beyond notions of ‘location’ as simple nodes, placenames and coordinates towards fuller support for complex geometries and advanced spatial reasoning. Finally, the potential impacts of such research is discussed with particular reference to the current practice of commercial archaeology, access to and publishing of (legacy, big) data, and leveraging network models to better understand and manage change within archaeological information systems.
