Web-Based Tutorial: Overview, Instructional Goal, and Performance Objectives
E-Learning platforms are software-controlled instructional communications media that
endeavor to duplicate what educators do in the traditional face-to-face classrooms. The following
paragraphs discuss an overview of a web-based tutorial intended to be employed to teach a group
of adult learners how to use Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 to create a family tree or an
organizational hierarchy. Additionally, the paragraphs further identify the instructional goal as
well as the specific performance objectives of the tutorial.
Overview of the Tutorial
Using a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, the writer develops the lesson through a
storyboard for this tutorial. The storyboard consists of a cover slide, reference slide, 14 slides of
the various steps of creating a family tree or organizational chart using PPT 2007, and two slides
containing two different evaluation/assessment practices followed by a slide of feedback on the
practices.
In the design of the tutorial, various components of multimedia; such as colorful texts,
graphics and animation have been judiciously used for the effectiveness of the tutorial.
Additionally, the tutorial includes a YouTube video clip that further presents and describes the
steps of the topic thus making the instructional experience easier to grasp and more interactive
and appealing for the learners.
Based on the understanding of how end users normally think and interact with websites,
and based on the fundamental patterns of learners’ behavior, the four major principles of web
design: alignment, contrast, proximity and repetition (Williams, 2008) have also been applied to
the tutorial layout. While the application of these principles on the storyboard design is expected

to facilitate easy navigation of the tutorial, the inclusion of the graphics or the visuals will also
help in reinforcing the terminal objectives of the instruction.
Other principles of web design that have also been applied on the tutorial include the
principles of usability and utility. According to Vitaly Friedman (2012), rather than the visual
design, utility and usability are among factors that can establish the success or failure of a
website. Given that the end users of the webpage are the only ones that click the mouse and
decide everything, user-centered design must be the typical approach for effective web design.
After all, when users are not able to make use of a website feature, then the feature must not be
present.
It is noteworthy that the target beneficiaries or audience of this tutorial are the teachers
especially the novice of any given school, who wish to use PPT as a part of their various
teaching tools but are not yet well conversant with certain features or applications of the
software; such as how to create organizational chart. So, this tutorial can be used to help such
novice educators towards achieving their goal and mastering the use of Microsoft PowerPoint
presentation. The instruction is delivered through e-learning platform to make it more convenient
and accessible for the learners.
Instructional Goal
PowerPoint presentation is an essential instructional tool especially for educators.
However, it has been noticed that some teachers specifically the beginners, are lacking the basic
knowledge and appropriate skills of using Microsoft PPT to enhance their teaching in class.
Serving in part as a web-based professional development, the goal of this tutorial is to teach such
teachers in our school district the effective use and application of PPT in the delivery of teaching
and learning in the classroom.

Performance Objectives
By the end of this tutorial, the learner will be able to: 1) describe verbally and in writing
all the steps of creating family tree using a computer with Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 with at
least 99% accuracy; 2) create a standard family tree or an organizational chart using a computer
with Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 in not more than ten (10) minutes; and 3) elaborate on the
importance and four different uses of Microsoft PPT for teachers using two and a half pages of
writing.
