iPad & Android Augmented Reality For Teachers J Villis
1. Augmented Reality and Education –
A teachers’ thoughts
AR stands for Augmented Reality, it “is a live, direct or indirect, view of a
physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or
supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as
sound, video, graphics or GPS data”
I find the concept exciting and I am personally looking forward to the potential
use within the education department. I use several AR apps and my students are
highly responsive.
I have designed this presentation to share with you some of the ways AR is being
used in the community, how it can be used in the classroom and future
possibilities.

5. Word Lens
This is one of the first AR apps which I was introduced to. You can see the
world in your language, instantly translate printed words using your built-in
video camera, in real time!
For iPad it is free but language packs need to be purchased separately from within the app.
For Android you can download a free demo but it will then cost you $AUS4.99.
Here is the link to a YouTube demonstration. I think it is worth watching, even just for
interest purposes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2OfQdYrHRs

7. Daqri App
The Daqri app is a portal to a vibrant world of 4D augmented
reality experiences. According to their website “DAQRI is the
world’s leading augmented reality developer, providing custom
software and creative solutions to clients across a broad spectrum
of industries. We help businesses leverage the latest innovations

8. Spacecraft 3D
This is one of my favourite AR apps because it is in alignment with
Year 3 an Year 5 Science (Primary Connections) units. The app is
free to download for iPad and Android. You will need to download
the AR card for free but the one AR card will allow your device to
read multiple space crafts.

9. ColAR Mix App
Primary students love this AR app. You need to download the
colouring sheets, ask students to colour in the sheets an the
augment them using your iPad or Android device.
Of all the paid AR apps, this is the one
that I recommend the most.
Approximately $3.00, less than a cup of
coffee!

10. AR Alphabet
This is another awesome AR app. The app is available for iPad and
Android. I like the alphabet app because you can print off the AR
cards for free, laminate them and then integrate them within your
literacy rotation groups. There are also dinosaurs for free and
planets (paid).

11. String
String is a free AR app which brings characters to life. Once you
have downloaded the app, you will need to print the AR cards
from their site in order for the AR to happen. You will see a
dragon, Proto (a green three eyed character), Scrawl and a
sneaker come to life.

program by Google to develop an augmented
reality head-mounted display (HMD). Project Glass
products would display information in smartphonelike format hands-free and could interact with the
