The GEF Western Indian Ocean Marine Highway Development and Coastal and Marine Contamination Prevention Project aims to develop regional cooperation on maritime transport issues. It has 4 components: 1) Developing regional marine highway infrastructure and institutions; 2) Building capacity to prevent coastal and marine contamination; 3) Building regional oil spill response capacity; 4) Coordinating project activities and monitoring fisheries. The project will help countries better manage vessel traffic growth and prevent accidents that could harm the marine environment through activities like improving nautical charts, contingency planning, and response coordination.
