2. Air- an important resource
ï Air pollution is caused by tiny particles and gases
called emissions that are released into the air.
ï What produces emissions that pollute the air?
â power plants that use fossil fuels to make
electricity
â vehicles (trucks, cars, airplanes, etc.)
â factories
â erupting volcanoes
ï Pollution is a change to the environment (air,
water, or soil) that is harmful to humans or
other living things.
ï Some changes to the air can have harmful
effects on humans and other living organisms.

4. The water supply
How does water get polluted?
1. Towns and cities pollute the water supply with
wastes that are washed down sinks, toilets, and
showers.
2. Industries like factories and power plants produce
wastes that pollute water.
3. Pesticides and fertilizers from farms end up in the
water supply.
4. Oil spills from large ships that transport oil across
the oceans cause serious pollution problems.
ï About 70% of Earthâs surface is covered by water.
ï Only a small amount of this water is useful to humans.
5. The water supply
ï Recycling programs all over the country are in place
to help reduce the solid waste that takes up so much
of our land space.
6. Global warming
ï Increased levels of carbon
dioxide can contribute to
global warming.
ï The amount of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere
has increased by about
30 percent since the
1800s.
ï Global warming refers to human interference
in Earthâs climate.
7.
8. Global warming
ï One acre of trees can provide oxygen for about
20 people each day.
ï This same acre of trees can also absorb
emissions, including carbon dioxide.
ï Trees can improve Earthâs air quality.

9. ï At Earthâs core, temperatures can reach 4982°C
(9,000°F).
ï Hot springs and geysers are created by surface water
that seeps into the ground and finally reaches these hot
rocks.
