/ (chapter taken from Learning Power) From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work JEANANYON It's no surprise that schools in wealthy communities are better than those in poor communities, or that they better prepare their students for desirable jobs. It may be shocking, however, to learn how vast the differences in schools are - not so much in resources as in teaching methods and philosophies of education. Jean Anyon obse111ed five elementa,y schools over the course of a full school year and concluded that fifth-graders of different economic back, 伊·ounds are _qjready - b eing prepared to occupy particular rungs on the social ladder. In a sense, some whole schools are on the vocational education track, while others are geared to produce future doctors, lawyers, and business leaders. Anyan's main audience is professional educators, so you may find her style and vocabulary challenging, but, once you've read her descriptions of specific classroom activities, the more analytic parts of the essay should prove easier to understand. Anyon is chairperson of the Department of Education at Rutgers University, Newark; This essay first appeared in Jomnal ofEducati-en in 1980. Scholars in political economy and the sociology of knowledge have recently argued that public schools in complex industrial societies like our own make available different types of educational experience and cuniculurn knowledge to students in different social classes. Bowles and Gintis1 for example, have argued that students in different social-class backgrounds are rewarded for classroom behaviors that correspond to personality traits allegedly rewarded in the different occupational s廿ata--the working classes for docility and obedience, the managerial classes for initiative and personal assertiveness. Basil Bernstein, Pierre Bourdieu, and Michael W. Apple focusing on school knowledge, have argued that knowledge and skills leading to social power and regard (medical, legal, managerial) are made available to the advantaged social groups but are withheld from the working classes to whom a more "practical" curriculum is offered (manual s沁11s, clerical knowledge). While there has been considerable argumentation of these points regarding education in England, France, and North America, there has been little or no attempt to investigate these ideas empirically in elementary or secondary schools and c assrooms m this country. This article offers tentative empirical support (and qualification) of the above arguments by providing illustrative examples of differences in student work in classrooms in contrasting social class communities. The examples were gathered as part of an ethnographical4 study of curricular, pedagogical, and pupil evaluation practices in five elementary schools. The article attempts a theoretical contribution as well and assesses student work in the light of a theoretical approach to social-class analysis ... It will be s ...

GO BACK TO TEACHING BASIC WRITING SKILLS Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) - Monday, January 23, 2006 Author: Donna Slone My greatest fear in grades seven through 12 in the 1960s was that my English teacher would make good on her daily threats. "I'm going to pinch your ears off and pitch you out the window," she shrieked whenever she caught a student daydreaming or unprepared. Irene Slusher struck fear into the hearts of every student who entered her classroom on the second floor of Jackson City School in Breathitt County. And we all had to enter. Mrs. Slusher taught English to everyone at the school. I was one of 18 in the 1968 graduating class. From her, we learned the parts of speech and the rules of punctuation. We never ended a sentence with a preposition. We learned to diagram sentences, and we memorized and recited poems. We didn't dare turn in an assignment without first editing it for grammatical errors. We took Mrs. Slusher seriously. Now, as a college English instructor, I find myself wanting to pinch off a few ears. It is not that I dislike my students; quite the opposite is true. The people I want to pitch out the window are the teachers and administrators who allowed these students to slip through high school without basic reading and writing skills. About 54 percent of college freshmen require remedial education in English, reading and/or math before they can take college-level courses that count toward graduation. The problem is not race or economics. I have taught students of many ethnic and economic backgrounds. The problem is not confined to large, inner-city schools. This fall, a few of my remedial students came from Chicago, Detroit and Miami. Some had graduated from public schools in Louisville. Others came from Franklin, Fayette and other Central Kentucky counties. They all lacked basic writing skills. They all told the same story: Their teachers didn't "count off" for errors in grammar and mechanics and didn't teach the parts of speech in junior and senior high school. While some of the students' remarks might be taken with a grain of salt, their poor skills speak for themselves. The students' most common errors are sentence fragments and run-on sentences. A student must recognize a subject and a verb before he can tell whether he has a complete sentence. Too many students cannot, which makes instruction in English classes as understandable as a foreign language. It is true that some students who need remedial courses slacked off in high school, but some received A's and B's in Advanced Placement English and still do not recognize the parts of speech. Some, when they receive D's on their first college essays, decide college is too difficult. College is not for everyone, but at open-admissions schools, we try to give those who want to attend every chance to succeed. As a result, we must first back up and teach basic skills, before we can teach the advanced skills in rhetoric that students should be learning .

Take advantage of the language in the songs, rhymes, poems and stories your young learners have already enjoyed in earlier classes to get them reading and writing painlessly. Wendy will show you three strategies based on what the children can already say: Morning Message, the Language Experience Approach and class-created Big Books. By the end of this webinar, teachers will be able to: - Connect listening and speaking to beginning writing and reading. - Decide when to begin writing and reading instruction. - Learn the steps of writing morning messages and Language Experience Stories. - State the advantages of shared writing and reading. - Find out how Big Books enhance reading instruction. This webinar for English Language teachers was hosted by the Regional English Language Office at the US Embassy in Peru. ► About the speaker: ▪▪ Wendy Coulson is an English Language Fellow in Medellin, Colombia working at Centro Colombo Americano Medellin, a binational center, creating training workshops for teachers of young learners and those with learners with special needs. Successful language learners — who are they? What is it that makes some students into fluent and confident users of English while others are struggling to wrap their heads around it? In my talk I am going to argue that while dedication, effort, and motivation are all very important, it is our learning habits that help us become successful language learners and achieve our learning goals. Moreover, together we will link good learning habits to learner autonomy. Finally, I will share some practical tips how to plant good learning habits in our students and help them grow into autonomous learners. Three takeaways Participants 1 will be able to define 'a good learning habit' and become aware of some examples of language learning habits; 2 will be able to describe an autonomous learner and bridge learner autonomy and learning habits; 3 will get some practical tips how to plant good learning habits in their students and promote learner autonomy.
