2. 2014 Data Storage Trend Predictions
6. Online data repositories will grow to sizes that were once inconceivable. Once reserved
for federal government and supercomputing environments, online data repositories of
multiple petabytes, and even exabytes, are starting to become commonplace in the
enterprise.
7. Organizations will begin to recognize the benefits of Object Storage more easily as
enterprise applications increasingly create support for Object and RESTful interfaces to
storage.
8. A shift will begin toward an increase in adoption of the high capacity, enterprise tape
drive technology such as the TS1140 and T10K, to be adopted in the broad set of
markets dealing with the need for high capacity, long term data storage.
9. The use of Linear Tape File Systems (LTFS) will become more prevalent as it increases
tape’s simplicity and ease of use.
10. The total capacity of new shipments of tape storage technologies will continue to grow
due to broad adoption of tape storage medium in new areas, such as active file archive,
low-cost NAS storage, and as a deep archive offered by cloud providers, in addition to
traditional uses in backup, disaster recovery and compliance.
3. 2014 Data Storage Trend Predictions
1. The need for a new tier of storage – deep storage – will become widely
recognized outside the cloud storage market, rising in demand and usage in
the enterprise.
2. RESTful interfaces will begin to gain more widespread interest and
acceptance as a simpler, more scalable storage interface that overcomes the
limitations of file systems for storage of extremely large data sets.
3. The DS3 interface (which leverages RESTful protocols) will expand beyond
early adoption and begin to be recognized as the best interface option for
object storage in data-intensive organizations.
4. Hadoop usage will increase dramatically in production usage in the enterprise.
5. Large scale Hadoop deployments will begin looking for best practices to
optimize the cluster for performance and data storage efficiency.
