Java faces challenges of uncertainty, fragmentation, and declining popularity, especially in mobile where Android boosted it but JavaME's future is unclear. Oracle's acquisition also affects its openness. However, Java remains strong in enterprise applications and cloud computing, and new versions address past issues. While scripting languages challenge Java's niche, it remains friendly to them. Overall Java must adapt to changes in mobile, RIA, cloud, and its stewardship to remain relevant across industries.
