Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men and forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum). It is a slow growing cancer and may extend as it spreads to nearby tissues and organs and then metastasizes to other more distant organs (lymph nodes, bones, lungs, etc.) via the bloodstream. Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) :
The rectum (back passage) is close to the prostate
gland, so your doctor can feel for any abnormalities
in the prostate by inserting a gloved finger into the
rectum. This may be uncomfortable but should not
be painful.
If cancer is present in the prostate gland it may feel
hard and knobbly, whereas with benign prostatic
hyperplasia it's usually enlarged, firm and smooth.
However, often the prostate may feel normal, even
when cancer cells are present.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test :
This is a blood test that measures the total amount of prostate specific
antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the
prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It is normal for all men to have a
small amount of PSA in their blood. A raised PSA level may show that you
have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily prostate cancer.
All men aged over 50 are entitled to have a PSA test as long as they have first
talked through the pros and cons with their GP. You can have a PSA test at
your GP surgery.

What are the advantages PSA Test?
It may help pick up a more aggressive cancer at an early stage
when treatment may prevent the cancer from becoming more
advanced.
Regular PSA tests could be helpful for men who have a higher
risk of developing prostate cancer, but we need more evidence
about the best way of doing this.

Ultrasound:
Ultrasound scans use sound waves to build up a picture of part of the inside
of the body. To scan the prostate gland, a small probe is passed into the back
passage and an image of the prostate appears on a screen. This type of scan
is used to measure the size and density of the prostate.
Biopsy:
The removal of cells or tissues so they can be viewed under a microscope by
a pathologist. The pathologist will check the biopsy sample to see if there are
cancer cells and find out the Gleason score. Presence of protein specific
membrane antigen in diseased prostate cells is associated with high Gleason
score.
