This document summarizes two collaborative projects between elementary and high school students focused on creative writing and digital art. The first project, Pandora's Box, had high school students collaborate with 3rd graders to illustrate and digitally publish a story. They worked on storytelling, illustration, audio recording, and publishing across print, ebooks and video. The second project focused on a story about unicorns. Both provided opportunities for imagination, problem-solving, and cross-age collaboration between students. The document discusses the process, technology skills developed, and positive impact on both student groups.

When I was in college...
It’s an honor to have to opportunity to share this story of our little hometown collaborations.
I hope that it offers some kind of inspiration for the types of tools you can use or ways that
you can work together.

8. The Big Idea
Sunday, November 11, 12 8
This project was designed in the Challenge Based Learning format. I was lucky enough to be
selected as 1 of 18 educators from across the country to work w/Karen Cator and the Apple
Education team on the curriculum design side of the CBL framework.
9. To provide a collaborative learning

It is very intriguing how truly pure the creative mind’s of young children are and how
important it is to provide learning experiences that exercise their creativity.
12. The Process
Sunday, November 11, 12 12
It is more about the “Village” and the process vs. the product! About 100 Individuals!!!
-working together collaboratively with a visual arts & technology focus was the foundation
***When I pitched it to my students they were VERY excited by the possibility of working with
young students in the schools they attended.
13. Story
Pandora: By Di a sophomore with the guidance of
Ex-Buena Vista Pictures VP, David Vogel
Unicorns: As part of an all grade level wide writing
contest for third graders
Tahquitz: Being written from multiple perspectives by
GATE middle schoolers w/a visit to Tahquitz Canyon
Sunday, November 11, 12 13
*The story was selected by Mr. David Vogel, ex-President of Buena Vista Pictures.
I worked with Taylor for several weeks storyboarding and breaking down multiple
versions of the story to accommodate the age group. I honestly lost track of how many
versions we wrote... luckily we had access to Acrobat.com so typing could occur in ‘the
Cloud.’
14. Collaboration
After the story is revised, Di students visit Rio Vista 3rd
graders to read the story & sketch the segments.

15. Artwork
PSUSD VPA Specialist returns to add color to the drawings
Sunday, November 11, 12 15
Without the coordination & assistance of Louisa as the Visual & Performing Arts specialist,
this project may not ever have gotten of the ground.
16. Digital Artwork
Di students scan all the art, then shoot and edit their
interpretations of it
Sunday, November 11, 12 16
Not knowing who the models will be is half the fun. Unicorns required help from one of our
VPs and Academy math teacher
17. Presentation
After digital artwork is created, Di students return to RV
to present their work to the whole grade level.
Sunday, November 11, 12 17
Sometimes elementary students are the tuffest audience! I’ve had kids up speaking in public
before, but this time it was interesting to see them more nervous then when speaking to
adults.
18. Revision
Di students make further edits to their work after
presenting and in preparation for publishing
Sunday, November 11, 12 18
Seeing and speaking about their work (to a tuff client) provided opportunity for reflection and
revision
19. Audio

29. Reflections

I would really like to find further opportunities to establish a peer system for projects like this
to continue in Cathedral City schools or PSUSD.

34. “The experience with the 3rd graders at Rio vista
was interesting. Communication was majorly
important, listening to the kids and providing
input for their sketches, while explaining to them
what they needed to draw was challenging. My
word was "Fear" and explaining what the word
meant to them and how to draw it out on paper
took a lot of thinking and brainstorming. It was
fun listening to the kids and all their amazingly
creative ideas.”

My favorite part was when we went back to Rio

36. “Both projects were a great experience. I got
to work with a diverse group to bring stories to
life and think deeply about ways to collaborate

They were priceless experiences that provided

37. "My students were so excited about
teaming with the high school students for
this project. They asked me everyday
when they were coming back to share
their pictures. My class discussed the
types of jobs that someone who had these
technical skills might aspire to in the
future. It was a great time of
collaboration and mentoring!"
-Joel Bible, Rio Vista 3rd Grade Teacher
Sunday, November 11, 12 37
38. “The cross age collaboration is a brilliant teaching strategy in that it
effectively benefits all parties involved. The elementary students are
able to learn from their high school mentors, both in technique and
with strategy for approaching the project. The high school students
in turn, greatly increase in maturity and poise as they coach and
advise the younger students. They also have the privilege of seeing
their work interpreted by professional artists, which is a career path
many of them are heading towards. The adult professionals so enjoy
the opportunity to revisit their artistic past, and bring their current
sophistication and experience to bear on the project.
The fact of the matter is that all three groups of artists are producing
artwork that is equally as valuable and viable…all that is different is
their unique perspectives on the same piece of literature, and how
they manifest that perspective into various mediums.”
-Louisa Castrodale, PSUSD Visual & Performing Arts Specialist
