Painting a portrait in oil
1. Painting a portrait in oil- layer upon layer By South African Artist : Ilse Kleyn. www.artofkleyn.co.za
2. I start my drawing the outlines with a small brush – using “purple lake”. I then do the under layer in “Indian yellow” and for the darker areas I use “Purple Lake” (Winsor & Newton oil paint)
3.
4. The under-layer is bright and radiant – perfect to vibrate true colour from underneath the finished painting. No white was used in the 1ste layer
5. With the second layer I use “Burnt sienna” mixed with “ Titanium white”. Little bit of “crimson” on the cheeks and “French Ultramarine” in the shadows.
6. In the top layer I use the same colours as the previous layer but add more high lights with pure white.
