Analysis of magazine front cover

3. Use of font and text
I've used a number of different fonts throughout my front cover as this
adds variety to the piece and makes it more interesting and appealing to
the reader.
The font of my masthead is simple. This means that it is easy to read and
means that regular readers of my magazine will be able to see it clearly
amongst all other magazines. The one word title also means that the text
itself can be larger and it makes the title of the magazine easier to
remember because its simple and only one word.
4. Use of font and text: synergy
The main article on “Beneath” has used the same font that
was used in the trailer and on the poster. This keeps the
synergy between the 3 products flowing and means that
someone who may have seen the same title and font on
one piece, e.g the trailer, may recognize the same font on
the magazine cover and so buy the magazine because
they want to hear more about the film they just watched
the trailer of.
5. Use of font and text
I created the WIN competition because I think this will
attract some readers to buying the magazine beause they
belive they could be in for the chance of winning, in this
case a 100 pound itunes voucher.
I placed the line “dawson exclusive” in a red box to make
the white writing stand out on it and to draw the readers
attention to the fact that ‘our’ magazine has an exclusive
with a well known actor which no one else will have. This
will also make the magazine more attractive to buy.
6. Use of font and text
Underneath the title of the feature film is a shorter more in depth taster into what
the main article about Adam is all about. This is intended to whet the readers
appetite to just even pick up the magazine and take a peek inside.
The fact that the title is in the middle of the page means that the readers attention
is drawn straight to it. Coupled with the colour of the background, a general grey,
and the fact that the title of the film, a stark white, is sandwiched between two bits
of red, the text below and the rectangle above. This all helps to direct the reader
towards the main focal point of this front cover.
7. Use of font and text
As you can see the other feature article on the front page is about “Rick Harken” ‘world famous set
designer’. This is affectively advertised twice on the front cover because it has a piece at the bottom and a
piece at the top. I have linked these with the light blue colour as the reader spots the name once they then
see it again and because it features twice this obviously means that its an important article. Inside the
magazine the article featuring the set designer would be highlighted in the same blue so that the reader
associates this colour with the article throughout the whole magazine.
Also by using a well known set designer (fictional) I would be attracting readers to this article because they
know they will be getting a good article and so may be more likley to pick the magazine up.
I have use a different font for the name of the set designer to the surrounding text in a bid to make his name
stand out more so that the reader remembers this easily when reading the magazine and it makes it stand
out more
8. Use of font and text
Finally the text next to the barcode is small, displaying the date and
the price. The date is really just a reference for readers who want to be
sure that they have the right edition and the price is there for obvious
reasons. The price has been made smaller so that readers are less
likely to notice it and be put off from buying the magazine.
The barcode is there so that shops can easily scan the item through
the checkout and the price acts as a backup for any little shops who
cant afford or have no need for a barcode scanner.
9. Images
The main image on the front cover is out of the film Beneath. Again I'm using synergy to my advantage by
using an image taken from the movie itself so that people may recognize the film if they’ve seen the trailer.
I've made the image grayscale as in colour its too harsh and complicated. Having the photo grayscale
simplifies it and allows the reader to see the photo for what it is. By blacking out their eyes with rectangles
this makes it seem like a government cover up like the photograph has been doctored so the identities of the
people are secret, this adds to the suspense that people who have seen the trailer will know about and those
who haven’t will become intrigued as to why they aren't allowed to see the actors full faces. We all know you
always want what you cant have….
Also the main image precedes the masthead, or title, of the magazine, this could indicate that in fact this
film is so important that it deserves to be in front of the magazine’s own title. This effect was created by
cutting out the cyclists helmet and pasting it over the top of the title. It makes the image almost 3D helping
it to stand out to the reader and also accentuates the importance of the central character, who the interview
is with, Adam.

The other pictures on this cover are the three at the bottom of the page and the small circular
one at the top.
All bear significance to the article about Rick Harken and all 3 at the bottom contain a small
amount of text to explain a little about the pictures and what will be in the article. The image
at the top which is cut out in a circle shape just adds a different edge to the front cover and
keeps it interesting and dynamic.
The white box combined with the blue outline help the images to stand out and act as a
simple plain background for them. The blue outline also helps the pictures to be visually linked
with the Rick Harken article.
