comes to an end; the audience leaves and that’s it. Today I don’t want to end but set us on the road to a bright future of cooperation.
All Specializations & Roles have the same foundational skills…World-wide focus groups found EA to be a role, not a specializationEA’s are a cost in search of value with many organizations making them consultative groups (i.e., profit-centers) to re-coop costs
A quality attribute is a non-functional characteristic of a component or a system. It represents a cross-cutting architectural concern for a system or system of systems. This pillar is one that has been described in a number of standards and has been an area of focus of a number of IASA fellows in particular Len Bass and Paul Clements of SEI Carnegie Mellon University. It’s the ilitiesreliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability IEEE 1061: The degree to which software possesses a desired combination of quality attributesISO/IEC 9126-1: Defined with six categories of characteristics: functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability which are divided into sub-characteristics
Design skills are an architects primary tool in delivering architecture strategy and product to the business. This is really Design from a pure design science perspective ‘Alan Hevner’ the theory of design and the practice along with the artefacts that are produced as a product of the design process - models – of business and of technology – Strategy maps, capability maps, business process, BPMN, IDEF1X, UML, SOAML, health models, logical and physical, structural and behavioural.Good design is justifications, reasons and trade off considerations….it encompasses capturing the decisions made.
Human Dynamics encompasses the skills associated with managing and influencing people and their interrelationships in the context of an IT project or environment. If we better understand the personality types of others against our own based on behavioral styles we can adapt to the styles of others to promote mutual advancement. That covers the 5 pillars but how do we educate an architect?what does an architects career look like in terms of progression? What are the major milestones?
IASA’s professional development program is based on Bloom’s taxonomy for skills acquisition. This defines a path that will take a ‘student’ from No knowledge to basic awareness, from awareness to practice, from practice to delivery, connectivity and leadership. So let’s talk today about what we currently have and then we can discuss what’s on the agenda for 2011Foundation certification is built on top of the IASA pillars it tests an individual on the concepts related to becoming an architect; this is supported by a number of IASA education programs that help build that awareness.CITA-P is a professional board-level review a candidate is required to prepare a set of documents explaining proficiency and experience; there is somewhere between 60-80 hours preparatory work, the candidate is guided through the process by an advisor. The candidate then presents to a 4 person board of certified architects for 30 minutes followed by 90 minutes of Q&A covering all of the skills pillars and the candidates area of specialisation. What’s coming – the IASA Associate project has commenced and we expect this to be complete and available by April 2011 this is a combination of course work, exam and evaluation that takes an aspiring architect deep into each of the pillars.CITA-M is for candidates who have a mastery of architecture that has been demonstrated through their experience and has contributed through industry leadership. Finally we are developing an internship program that can be embedded into organisations accredited by IASA that will ensure that an architect gets sufficient exposure to and practice of architect skills as a part of a growth and development plan.So that’s IASA in a nutshell but what of the relationship with CEPIS and ECF etc. Let’s take a quick look at that…
