Introduction to American Literature

COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION Survey of
 American literature from pre-colonial
 beginnings to Walt Whitman (30A). American
 romanticism to literature of the twentieth
 century (30B).
Students will be able to:
  – Understand and evaluate various genre
  – Think critically about what he/she reads, hears,
    and believes.
  – Respond and communicate intellectual and
    emotional perceptions clearly and effectively in
    written and oral discussions
ASSIGNMENTS: 6 hours/week. (List all assignments,
  including library assignments. Requires two (2)
  hours of independent work outside of class for
  each unit/weekly lecture hour. Outside
  assignments are not required for lab-only
  courses, although they can be given.)
Out-of-class Assignments:
1. Readings in primary and secondary materials.
2. Writing in journals based on readings.
3. Writing of essays based on reading and lecture
   materials

STUDENT ASSESSMENT: (Grades are based on):

  (Includes "blue book" exams and any written
  assignment of sufficient length and complexity
  to require students to select and organize
  ideas, to explain and support the ideas, and to
  demonstrate critical thinking skills.)
Assigned readings from among, but not limited to, the following
        authors: William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor,
        Phillis Wheatley, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne,
        Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Emily
        Dickenson, Frederick Douglass, Stephen Crane, Henry James,
        and Kate Chopin.
