ABSTRACT
In the global world of IT/ITES industry, fresh IT graduates are dealing with more challenges
and competition in getting the employment. A report of National Association of Software and
Service Companies (NASSCOM) states that, in India, only 25% of the fresh graduates are considered
readily employable by the IT industry. In continuation of this, Ministry of Human Resource and
Development, New Delhi also released a report which has similar opinion. This statement provokes
the need to identify the expectations of the industry to be fulfilled from the fresh graduates to
become readily employable. It has therefore become necessary for educational institutes to
understand the industry perspective. In this paper authors have focused on the different perspectives
of IT industry in order to increase an employability of MCA freshers.

LITERATURE SURVEY

S.P. Gupta et. al., mentioned that, ITES industry can create new employment opportunities
which could be ten times greater in number than those directly involved in core IT industries as the
application of information technology has reached all kinds of traditional industries [1]. For
developing employable freshers, it is necessary to shift the curriculum from traditionally academic to
practically relevant one. As India’s IT revolution has been fuelled by the availability of a very large
reservoir of engineers, the challenge is to give them adequate inputs to generate not only sufficient
but also surplus capabilities. As the technology has been changing with a great pace, FICCI suggests
that new learning model should be developed utilizing the learning of persons working in industry.
Institutions may utilize the expertise from the industry as well as alumni [2]. P.N. Gupta et al.,
suggests that the educational institutes can develop direct linkages with the industry and utilize it to
strengthen quality of education and fulfill the industry requirement. As it is win-win situation for
both of them, the linkages can grow faster [3]. FICCI has also suggested domain specific

competence, work related skills and non-relevance of the curriculum as important reasons for unemployability of graduates [4]. Ramandeep Sudan et al., emphasize on quality of education in close
alignment with local and global industry needs [5].

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE

As the manpower requirement in area of computer applications was felt in nineties, In India,
a new programme “Master of Computer Applications (MCA)” was initiated in 1990 by Indian
Society for Technical Education. This programme offers an opportunity to any graduate to become
suitable for IT/ITES industry. This forced a large number of institutions to introduce this new
programme. Currently, IT market has become very demanding and is pushing the industry into a
situation where there is no excuse for incompetence resulting into a high pressure on management
and policy makers of academic institutions to turnout graduates with proper inputs so that the fresh
graduates can look for placement opportunities in their Dream Companies offering attractive salary
and perquisites. This paper tries to identify the desired inputs for such freshers.
3.

GOALS

The objective of this work is to investigate the expectations of IT/ITES companies in terms of
the skills to be acquired by the MCA freshers for the enhancement of their employability. Goals of
this research are defined as
• To know specific skills required by IT/ITES industry.
• To find out the skill gaps between MCA freshers and IT/ITES industry requirements.
4.

METHODOLOGY

The authors have used following research methodology:
• Collection of data about the fresher’s common skills required by the IT industry in general.
• Gathering the information from the IT experts, broad segments and sub segments of the IT
industry.
• The specific skill sets to be acquired by the freshers were identified by conducting personal
interviews of experts from IT industry.
• Common minimum expectations from a fresher for their employability were drawn from the
above data.

BACKGROUND - COMMON RECRUITMENT PROCESS IN IT/ITES

INDUSTRY
To recruit large number of freshers, most of the IT/ITES industries prefer the campus
placement process. To carry out this process, the institutes are inviting IT/ITES companies and based
on the requirement, the companies are deciding to visit the various campuses. Company
communicates eligibility criteria along with selection process. Qualified students register themselves
for the same. During the visit to campus, pre-placement talk comprises of company profile, their
products, and technology platforms available as well as pay package. Selection process includes
mainly three rounds viz. Aptitude Test, Technical Test/ Interview, Personal Interview. Candidates
are short listed in the final round with the benchmark defined by the company. The process ends with
declaration of selected candidates by issuing offer letter to them. One of the sample communication
received from company is given below.

AVAILABLE SPECTRUM IN IT DOMAIN FOR RECRUITMENT

Nowadays Pune city is known as the IT hub and there are around 300 IT companies in and
around city. IT/ITES industry is mainly divided into product and service and further extended to
testing. In the Indian scenario IT/ITES is having large spectrum inside. It is very difficult to interact
with all industries; therefore only top 15 renowned companies who regularly recruit student through
college campus are selected to know their perspectives. An initial interaction is carried out with the
15 experts from different IT/ITES industry.
A very first observation stated by the experts is that the freshers have less idea about IT
sectors and opportunities available in different sections or departments of these sectors where as
freshers are always dreaming only a job of developer. From the industry experts we came to know
the different domains available for the freshers. The major domains available in IT/ITES industry are
given below.
Enterprise Applications Intensive Workloads such as Databases, Business Intelligence and
Virtualization, Modeling and Simulation, SAP, Digital Content Creation, Electronic Design
Automation, Image And Signal Processing, Financial Algorithms, Scientific Research And Seismic
Processing, Cloud Computing, Network Management Engines, Internet Cache Engine, Intrusion
Detection Systems, Unified Messaging, Gateway/Gatekeeper/SS7 solutions, VOIP Services and
Voice portals, IP Translation Database Processing, e-Commerce, ERP, e-Governance, Infrastructure
Management, Software Testing and Quality Assurance, Transcription / Data capture, Data Analytics,
Data Warehousing, Gaming and Animation, Web based Application Development, Production
Support, Service Providers, Database Management, Business Analysis, UI Design, Technical
Writing, Consultancy and Training.
During interaction, it has observed that freshers have misunderstood about software testing
(less competitive work, less salary, less future etc) and freshers refuse offers which are then gets
open to other graduates.

8.2
67% of the experts prefer attitude is an important additional parameter while selecting the
freshers which probably is a alarm to everyone that attitude of the freshers is not according to
expectations of the industry.
8.3
60% experts are of the opinion that present curriculum needs alignment with industry
expectations.
8.4
Curriculum revision: Frequent (about 3 Years) revision of curriculum is necessary to keep
pace with rapid change in technology.
8.5
Current freshers are poor in soft skills, industry needs a street smart fresher.
8.6
In opinion of expert following points were revealed
8.6.1 Institute play major role in campus placement.
8.6.2 Establishment of Training and Placement Office and appointment of experienced Training and
Placement Officer (TPO) is necessary.
8.6.3 Continuous interaction with industry experts by TPO is mandatory.
8.6.4 Training of students for Aptitude Test, Mock Interview and Soft skills is essential.
8.6.5 Involvement of alumni for appraising the current students about requirement in industry.
8.6.6 Institute must showcase the performance of students in University Examinations and track
record for the placement of students with well known industries.
8.7
The IT experts have suggested that institute should undertake the following for developing
employable fresher:
8.7.1 Well designed softskills program
8.7.2 Industry feel that institute should give free hands to the students to do something creative,
allow them to use laboratory to their maximum extend.
8.7.3 Avoid traditional assignments.
8.7.4 Introduce mini project in a group. Evaluation by industry.
8.7.5 Train freshers OFFBIT skills/trends.
8.7.6 Technical presentation with ROI of work done in terms of time, cost, performance, manpower
etc.
8.7.7 Increase industrial training.
8.7.8 Include problem solving subjects.
8.7.9 Offer more number of electives.
8.8
Initiatives like mini projects and its evaluation may give some idea about thinking of the
students.
9.

CONCLUSION

This paper has discussed, in a personal interaction with the IT/ITES experts for the job
placement at micro levels other than the common one in order to help the institute to increase
employability of freshers. Following are the three major parameters to improve the overall
employability of MCA freshers:
•

The analysis of interaction indicates that in general
- Technical skills, logical ability and communication skills of the freshers are essential
parameters while recruiting the freshers for recruitment.
- Most of the experts in industry emphasize ‘Attitude’ is an important parameter.
- In general, industry is not happy about inputs received by freshres.
- Since the spectrum of IT/ITES industry is very wide, it is necessary to pinpoint the specific
technical skills, the common minimum technical and logical abilities that every fresher must
acquire. And therefore a macro level survey for important parameters as identified in the survey
is necessary.

Kulkarni3 1 Research Scholar, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune, INDIA, 2 Vice President, Vishwakarma Institutes, Pune, INDIA, 3 Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune, INDIA, ABSTRACT In the global world of IT/ITES industry, fresh IT graduates are dealing with more challenges and competition in getting the employment. A report of National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) states that, in India, only 25% of the fresh graduates are considered readily employable by the IT industry. In continuation of this, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi also released a report which has similar opinion. This statement provokes the need to identify the expectations of the industry to be fulfilled from the fresh graduates to become readily employable. It has therefore become necessary for educational institutes to understand the industry perspective. In this paper authors have focused on the different perspectives of IT industry in order to increase an employability of MCA freshers. Keywords: Employability, Common Skills, Value Added Skills, IT/ITES Industry Perspective 1. LITERATURE SURVEY S.P. Gupta et. al., mentioned that, ITES industry can create new employment opportunities which could be ten times greater in number than those directly involved in core IT industries as the application of information technology has reached all kinds of traditional industries [1]. For developing employable freshers, it is necessary to shift the curriculum from traditionally academic to practically relevant one. As India’s IT revolution has been fuelled by the availability of a very large reservoir of engineers, the challenge is to give them adequate inputs to generate not only sufficient but also surplus capabilities. As the technology has been changing with a great pace, FICCI suggests that new learning model should be developed utilizing the learning of persons working in industry. Institutions may utilize the expertise from the industry as well as alumni [2]. P.N. Gupta et al., suggests that the educational institutes can develop direct linkages with the industry and utilize it to strengthen quality of education and fulfill the industry requirement. As it is win-win situation for both of them, the linkages can grow faster [3]. FICCI has also suggested domain specific 183

Ramandeep Sudan et al., emphasize on quality of education in close alignment with local and global industry needs [5]. 2. NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE As the manpower requirement in area of computer applications was felt in nineties, In India, a new programme “Master of Computer Applications (MCA)” was initiated in 1990 by Indian Society for Technical Education. This programme offers an opportunity to any graduate to become suitable for IT/ITES industry. This forced a large number of institutions to introduce this new programme. Currently, IT market has become very demanding and is pushing the industry into a situation where there is no excuse for incompetence resulting into a high pressure on management and policy makers of academic institutions to turnout graduates with proper inputs so that the fresh graduates can look for placement opportunities in their Dream Companies offering attractive salary and perquisites. This paper tries to identify the desired inputs for such freshers. 3. GOALS The objective of this work is to investigate the expectations of IT/ITES companies in terms of the skills to be acquired by the MCA freshers for the enhancement of their employability. Goals of this research are defined as • To know specific skills required by IT/ITES industry. • To find out the skill gaps between MCA freshers and IT/ITES industry requirements. 4. METHODOLOGY The authors have used following research methodology: • Collection of data about the fresher’s common skills required by the IT industry in general. • Gathering the information from the IT experts, broad segments and sub segments of the IT industry. • The specific skill sets to be acquired by the freshers were identified by conducting personal interviews of experts from IT industry. • Common minimum expectations from a fresher for their employability were drawn from the above data. 5. BACKGROUND - COMMON RECRUITMENT PROCESS IN IT/ITES INDUSTRY To recruit large number of freshers, most of the IT/ITES industries prefer the campus placement process. To carry out this process, the institutes are inviting IT/ITES companies and based on the requirement, the companies are deciding to visit the various campuses. Company communicates eligibility criteria along with selection process. Qualified students register themselves for the same. During the visit to campus, pre-placement talk comprises of company profile, their products, and technology platforms available as well as pay package. Selection process includes mainly three rounds viz. Aptitude Test, Technical Test/ Interview, Personal Interview. Candidates are short listed in the final round with the benchmark defined by the company. The process ends with declaration of selected candidates by issuing offer letter to them. One of the sample communication received from company is given below. 184

Technical Interview and HR interview AVAILABLE SPECTRUM IN IT DOMAIN FOR RECRUITMENT Nowadays Pune city is known as the IT hub and there are around 300 IT companies in and around city. IT/ITES industry is mainly divided into product and service and further extended to testing. In the Indian scenario IT/ITES is having large spectrum inside. It is very difficult to interact with all industries; therefore only top 15 renowned companies who regularly recruit student through college campus are selected to know their perspectives. An initial interaction is carried out with the 15 experts from different IT/ITES industry. A very first observation stated by the experts is that the freshers have less idea about IT sectors and opportunities available in different sections or departments of these sectors where as freshers are always dreaming only a job of developer. From the industry experts we came to know the different domains available for the freshers. The major domains available in IT/ITES industry are given below. Enterprise Applications Intensive Workloads such as Databases, Business Intelligence and Virtualization, Modeling and Simulation, SAP, Digital Content Creation, Electronic Design Automation, Image And Signal Processing, Financial Algorithms, Scientific Research And Seismic Processing, Cloud Computing, Network Management Engines, Internet Cache Engine, Intrusion Detection Systems, Unified Messaging, Gateway/Gatekeeper/SS7 solutions, VOIP Services and Voice portals, IP Translation Database Processing, e-Commerce, ERP, e-Governance, Infrastructure Management, Software Testing and Quality Assurance, Transcription / Data capture, Data Analytics, Data Warehousing, Gaming and Animation, Web based Application Development, Production Support, Service Providers, Database Management, Business Analysis, UI Design, Technical Writing, Consultancy and Training. During interaction, it has observed that freshers have misunderstood about software testing (less competitive work, less salary, less future etc) and freshers refuse offers which are then gets open to other graduates. 185
