4. Interactive Patient System -The Vision
Decision Needed:
• HD TV available in homes and hotels
• Hospital TV industry - analog, low-definition.
• Technology breakthroughs
- Integration of patient services
- Homogenous environments - traditional TVs, IPTVs,
and/or other platforms
Challenge: Few proven hospital HDTV/IPS solutions existed
Result: Hospital selects Allen Technologies to provide
Interactive Patient System in HD.
4
5. Interactive Patient System -The Vision
Philosophy
Every patient should be provided with a media system to
improve comfort, convenience and safety.
• All TV, premium Video-On-Demand, games and internet
free-to-patient.
• Educational videos assigned and available for patient
browsing.
• IPS exchanges data with EMR (via HL-7)
• New features are provided, easily and transparently to
patient without adding new hardware.
• All patient rooms have monitor, networked PC, pillow
speaker, medical-grade keyboard.
5
7. Implementation – Go-Live Features
• 42” Flat screen monitor
• Free TV (Local Off-the-Air and DirecTV)
• Free Premium HD Movies-On-Demand (Swank)
• Welcome/Hospital information Movies-On-Demand (22)
• Health Education – On-Demand Videos (76)
• Free Internet Access via Patient Keyboard
• IPS reports information to EMR and ADT
• Remote IPS monitoring, maintenance, and support by Allen
Technologies
7
8. Implementation – Post Go-Live Features
• Patient Inbox & Auto-Assigned Education
• Educational Videos - Emmi Solutions
• Patient Requests – Pet, Spiritual, Music & Art
• Pain Assessment Scale Image
• Google Translation
• Games
• Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Yahoo Mail
• Internet Radio
• Guest Tray Meal Ordering
• Customized Screen for Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital Unit
• Expanded system in new facilities
8
10. Integration Activities in Queue
“Patient Room Temperature Control Integration”
Discharge = Unoccupied Mode
• Siemens Building Automation System (BAS) will be
integrated with the ADT system using the patent-pending
Intelligent Environment Interface from Allen Technologies.
• Upon discharge of the patient, the BAS will automatically
reduce air flow in the patient room to minimum design
while retaining code required “air balance and air changes”
• The reheat coil valve that ventilates/supplies air to the
patient room will be closed. This sequence is the most
economical setting for this type of HVAC system.
Result: Significant energy savings when room is unoccupied.
10
11. Integration Activities Queue
“Patient Room Temperature Control Integration”
Admit = Occupied Mode
• Upon patient admission, BAS automatically releases reheat
valve and VAV flow controller to modulate air flow
• Room Temperature set point becomes 72°
• Nurse, patient or guest can adjust room temperature at any
time using wall-mounted room thermostat.
• Patient able to adjust room temperature on IPS by selecting
“Adjust Your Room Temperature”
11
12. Integration Activities Queue
“Patient Room Temperature Control Integration”
Patient Media System Home Page
“Adjust Your Room Temperature” is selected
12
15. Integration Activities Queue
“Patient Room Temperature Control Integration”
Benefits
• Improved Patient Satisfaction
• Human Energy Savings - Nurses / Facilities staff can focus
on health priorities not patient “hot/cold” requests.
• 10% Heating/Cooling plant energy savings - $250,000/year
(boiler gas, electricity for chiller, pumps and fans)
15
16. IPS Achievements
IPS improves the patient’s experience by:
• Giving each patient tools to personalize communications
and engagements.
• Providing extensive entertainment options in HD format.
• Enabling patient to stay connected to family, friends and
world via the internet from bedside.
• Providing patients with the latest health information –
prescribed and On-Demand.
• Enabling patient control for “self-service requests “:
• Spiritual Advisor, pet, musician visits or art session
• Guest meal trays
16
17. New Feature Development Want List
Information to be pushed to Patient
• MyCare Team Display
• MyCare Plan of the Day
• Ticker Crawl Display – (alerts, notices; fire alarm testing)
• Discharge Planning Checklists
• Comfort & Room Requests (Housekeeping & Maintenance)

18. New Feature Development Want List 2014
TV Signal to be upgraded to full digital
Current analog/digital TV programming is 60/40.
Analog channels received via satellite
Digital channels received from off-air television stations
Regardless of how good an analog TV signal – resolution
is poor on large screen TVs.
• Comcast HD programming will be streamed to each
patient room using Allen Technologies IPTV.
• RF signal will be disconnected.

18
19. More IPS Planned for 2014 at Los Gatos
• All Los Gatos “Alien Head” analog TVs will be replaced with
Flat Screen, HDTVs in 2014.
• All patient rooms will be upgraded to “Interactive” using the
latest Allen Technologies IPS.
• The Los Gatos IPS will be networked to the Mountain View
Campus to utilize existing ATI servers, programming and
media – reducing capital, service and energy costs.
19
20. Support
Remote Monitoring, 24/7 support, and feature upgrades
• Monthly (SaaS) fees, releases, upgrades of ATI IPS software
and access to ATI Customer Care Center are included in fee.
• Deployment of most new features is included in monthly SaaS
fee.
• One “Test Room” equipped with complete IPS station for
Hospital Facilities staff to test and troubleshoot IPS devices
(pillow speakers / keyboards)
• One IPS unit located in administrative conference room where
“IPS Initiatives Committee” meets to submit new features,
define and evaluate them. New features are tested by the
committee where they are approved and deployed for patient
use.
