Evaluation Task 1
In what way does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Camera- Silhouette
Here you can see from a clip from the
thriller ‘Sherlock Holmes’ That our
silhouette shot is very similar to a shot
from it. The idea of the light coming
from behind is something that is
obviously in trend when making exciting
thrillers. They are also used to create
memorable , spine tingling shots, a lot
of the time to establish location more
than the actual characters as we can
see from the Spielberg classic E.T.
Location and Shot
Here is a shot from the Bourne
Identity of a character walking up the
stairs. Another very similar shot to the
one in our thriller sequence. Our
location didn’t have railings or a gap
through the staircase so therefore the
shot is not quite identical but the
suspense that comes from both
scenes is similar. Intentions and ideas
of what to come are similar.
Also the very bland color scheme in
both shots creates the similar feel of
location, a apartment block, not
necessarily well kept. Both films being
thriller shows that our concept works
within the ‘Thriller’ genre.
Baseball Bat
Another key element in our thriller
opening is one element used in some
of the most famous thrillers, such as
The Shining and Inglorious Bastards.
All of these are scenes that have been
truly memorable. A Baseball bat
obviously as well as signifying fun and
play it also shots death and danger.
And of course as well as suspense. IN
the Shining funnily enough she is
walking up stairs with the bat!
Independent British films with Gangs
Films like Kidulthood, Adult hood and
the Football factory are all
independent British films which show
severe violence with gangs and
towards others. This is the concept of
our Thriller and we always used British
Urban films for our inspiration. These
are very popular among the age group
we are trying to attack and much of
the ‘Mise en scene’ we are trying to
create within our thriller (costume
especially- hoodies, trackies etc.) are
what are in these films.
