2. • One can see our thriller (on the left) captures a similar shot to the shot
from the lovely bones on the right. The camera shoots from below, angled
upwards to give “villain” more of a presence and to give him a more
imposing personality. We have tried to shroud the characters face with
the tripod; so only glimpses can be seen. Similarly, in ‘the lovely bones’
half the man’s face is shrouded; this forms connotations of bad intentions
and a twisted plot.

3. • In both of these hands shots, the music is deliberately subtle but is essential in
creating an ominous atmosphere. In the lovely bones (right) the distorted sound of
a knife being scraped is used as the man fetches the bottle opener. In Reprisal, our
thriller (left) the music deliberately fades before the man enters the basement and
then re-emerges with the sound of low piano keys as the zip opens. Both of these
sounds create tension within the piece.

4. • Once again, the Lovely Bones shows an establishing shot fairly near the beginning of the
murder scene, to show the isolation of the room. We tried to do a similar thing with our shot;
showing an establishment of the basement and trying to create a similar isolation.
• The man then walks with his back to the camera to the other side of the room which gives a
sense of the depth of the room. We again, do a similar thing in our thriller as one can see…

5. • The above right photo is from the movie ‘one hour photo’. As you can see,
in this tense scene, the door lock is being opened, or locked. We have
captured a similar shot in our opening title sequence. It creates the sense
of isolation and mystery, as well as a sense of entrapment.

6. • “The Usual Suspects”, a famous thriller uses the same “feet shot” to
create mystery and an ominous atmosphere, that we use in our thriller.
Clearly, this technique is effective in creating a sense of suspense.
