1. 1st Slide: Soweto: talk about how great Soweto was and then tell them that it wasn’t always this way, Give a little background.

2. 2nd Slide: Talk about the town it’s name south western townships. They had few facilities such as cinemas and beer halls but was always very overcrowded and had to live in matchbox houses and even worse. Due to overpopulation.

3. 3rd Slide: In 1976 some lessons will be taught in Afrikaans because the government made British men and women learn German during the war.

4. 4th Slide: The government was also spending a lot less money on black pupils than white pupils and there were 48 blacks and 20 whites on average per class.

5. 5th Slide: This caused student riots, and they boycotted examinations but it became worse on june 16th when 20,000 school children started a riot.

6. 6th Slide: Of course the police came to stop them and the students all of them started hurling stones at the police and the police shot back with guns and threw tear gas.

7. 7th Slide: Winnie Mandela was one witness she says the children threw stones and used trash can lids as shields she was scared for the children because they were dying in the streets.

8. 8th Slide: Others marched forward she says they were prepared to face those machine guns that is what happens when you hunger for freedom nothing else seems to matter.

9. 9th Slide: A south African Police man says he has seen police make a baton charge they have vicious looks in their eyes and in the excitement they become murderers.

10. 10th Slide: Over the next few days government buildings and beer halls were burnt down many cars were destroyed in the streets and many black police men homes came crumbling down.

11. 11th Slide: Forster instructed security forces to get things back to normal at all costs. This included the crowds being fired on without warning often from behind.

12. 12th Slide: the riots eventually spread to other townships officials stated that 618 people were killed and 1500 were injured mostly schoolchildren.

13. 13th Slide: In the next year about 5000 people under the age of 18 were found guilty of various offenses.

14. 14th Slide: In july of 1976 the government plans of teaching Afrikaners were dropped it held investigation into what happened.

15. 15th Slide: the judge decided that the apartheid was to blame for the riots and the deaths and injuries of many people.

16. 16th Slide: This is not what forster and his government would like to hear that the riots in Soweto were now breaking news. As with Sharpeville which only involved a few thousand people whereas in Soweto tens of thousands rioted.

17. 17th Slide: The riots in Soweto had other lasting effects thousands of blacks cross the border and join MK to train as guerillas.

18. 18th Slide: Nelson Mandela’s wife Winnie Mandela was banned from Soweto because she organized a black parents committee.

19. 19th Slide: In the month of June there is continued death and continued riots an anniversary of riots based on what has happened in Soweto previously.

20. 20th Slide: Following the numerous amount of riots many Soweto protesters were very angry with vorsterand I quote one “ if we learn Afrikaners Vorster must learn Zulu!”
