Background Information Embryonic Stem Cells Stem cells extracted from embryos less than 7 days old Can differentiate into any kinds of tissues Adult Stem Cells Stem cells extracted from mature tissue of a grown human being Can differentiate into only one or few kinds of tissues
People We Met/ Works Cited Linda Thayer educator from Mass. Citizens for Life Prof. Joe Zhou Stem cell and regenerative Biology Working to cure diabetes Prof. Tracy Young Pearse Works in Brigham and Women’s hospital, Harvard Medical School Working to cure Alzheimer’s disease
Linda Thayer Rejects usage of embryonic stem cells Opinion 1: Adult stem cells are more efficient So far, more than 70 therapeutic methods to use adult stem cells are discovered. In case of embryonic stem cells, no method is discovered. Opinion 2: Usage of embryonic stem cell is unethical It is unclear of when life starts. Extracting cells from embryo destroys life.
First Day Today we arrived at the hotel and met with Linda Thayer. When she came, she talked to us about why she is against embryonic stem cell research, and how it is inhuman. We went to lunch. After, we went had a tour of MIT, and it was really long. The swimming pool was spectacular. The tour guide said that the first semester isn’t graded, so we can get adjusted to college life. When the tour was finished, we went back to the hotel and rested for an hour. We met back up and went to a Korean Restaurant called the Koreana. The food was good. Three of us went back to the hotel because they were jet lagged. The rest of us went to Faneuil Hall. We came back to the hotel after and went to bed.
Second Day Today, we went to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast and then we took the subway to Harvard to meet with Scott Balderson. He guided us to Professor Joe Zhou; a researcher in stem cell and regenerative biology. He brought us into his office and gave us a background of regeneration and how stem cells can be used. He then gave us a tour of the research lab. We met Dr. Laurence Daheron. After, we went to Thank God it’s Friday. The food took forever. We then went to meet with Professor Tracy Young. We got lost, but used Will’s iphone to find the building. She showed us a power point on how adult stem cells can be used to cure Alzheimer's. Then, Christina gave us a tour of the lab and showed us an electron microscope. At the end of the day, we handed out our flyers to the public. We had McDonald's for dinner and then came back to school.
Professor Joe Zhou Adult stem cells can differentiate into beta cells by using regenerative methods, enabling cure of type 1 diabetes. The reason that there is no therapeutic methods using embryonic stem cell is that embryonic stem cell was discovered few years ago whereas adult stem cells have been researched for thirty years.
Professor Tracy Young Pearse Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSC), which is created by reprogramming of adult skin cells, allow researchers to track mechanisms of neural diseases, especially Alzheimer’s. Establishment of iPSC lines enabled rare mutations or mechanisms of neural diseases to be tracked. The ultimate goal is to identify target for therapeutic intervention for neural diseases including Alzheimer’s.

Will Callif “The trip brought me to a realization that biology is moving forward, and fast. It is no longer a place for a man with a long beard that travels the world on a ship collecting beetles and bugs. There is advanced technology being used that we got the chance to see. The fact that this technology in combination with the minds of the people working in this field inspired me to want to be a part of the many advances taking place particularly in Stem Cell research that are being made every day. I disagreed with the statement some scientist said that stem cell research is the holy grail of all medicine. I believe that it will be a huge step in the right direction in curing diseases but there could be better methods, we won’t know.”
Katie Solman “It was inspiring to me to see all of the technology and equipment that is used for the research. There are many new types of biology that will stem off of the research. Embryonic stem cell research has only been happening for two years. It makes me think about what impact further research, and more answers, will have on society. I disagree with the pro life woman because I believe that it is not morally wrong and that embryonic stem cell research opens many doors for future cures and health benefits. ”
Winslow Mohr “This trip meant a lot to me. I learned that scientists and researchers these days, even college undergrads, can discover and put to use amazing things. For example, Dr. Zhou and his lab partners were working on a way to cure diabetes. Usually, the beta cells that produce insulin make up only a tiny part of the pancreas, and are held in little spheres. However, Dr. Zhou, along with his teammates, discovered a way to turn other parts of the pancreas into beta cells, which could theoretically cure diabetes. I personally disagree with some of the ideas the pro-life woman suggested to us. Although she had a pretty convincing argument, she took some of her facts out of context, changing what they mean completely. ”
Justin Suh “During the JUA, when Dr. Joe Zhou mentioned about a salamander as an example of regenerative cell, I was inspired because I thought, considering the current level of stem cell research, that people can applied the regenerative cell from salamander to human to cure the injured organs. I disagree with the pro-life woman because there are so many advantages that it is better to support the stem cell research than just going against it because it is morally wrong.”
Jeong Noh Lee “During the JUA, it was interesting to meet people that were in field of stem cell research and to learn about the stem cells. It was also interesting to know machines that were in lavatories of Harvard. I personally disagree with Ms. Thayer’s idea that embryonic stem cells should not be accepted. I respect her point of view but I think rejecting something that will bring many benefits just because she thinks they are unethical.”
SeungWook Lee “It was a great experience to learn about stem cell research which is one of the most recent biology issue. The professors and undergraduates from universities briefly explained about the specific part of stem cell research they’re working on. The most interesting information was that no therapeutic methods to use embryonic stem cells is discovered so far. The information told me that stem cell research is not almighty and is a field that still requires further research.”

Embryonic stem cell research has only been happening for two years. It makes me think about what impact further research, and more answers, will have on society. I disagree with the pro life woman because I believe that it is not morally wrong and that embryonic stem cell research opens many doors for future cures and health benefits. ”
