{"5":"A cartridge or “Tank” – this is what contains the nicotine, propylene glycol and water. \n","11":"BLUE line – how much nicotine store said the juice contained.\nRED line – how much nicotine the lab said it contained. \nThe lab that tested = American West Analytical laboratories (shipped out of state for nicotine testing) \nNicotine is\nA highly addictive drug\nRaises blood pressure and cholesterol, increasing likelihood of stroke or heart attack\nLethal – for children just 10 mg of nicotine could poison them\nPromotes insulin resistance which increases risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease\nSample 2 – sold as “0” nicotine but did have trace levels. Is this okay to sell to minors? Went back and bought 9 samples of “0” nicotine. Out of these tested, 7 came back 0 nicotine, 1 came back a 2.4, 1 came back a 1.2. CONCERN: selling something has 0 nicotine that really may have as much as a regular cigarette.\n","6":"Heating element that goes down inside the tank. Then they operate by electronically vaporizing the nicotine solution, creating a mist that is inhaled into the lungs. After the user inhales, the residual aerosol or vapor – is exhaled into the surrounding air.\n","1":"First, we’d like to introduce the e-cigarette. It is a battery powered device that users puff on as they would a real cigarette, but they do not light it and it produces no smoke. Rather, it produces a fine, heated vapor or mist which is absorbed into the lungs. \nManufacturers of e-cigarettes advertise their product as the first “healthy” cigarette, free of harmful chemicals and tar that are typically found in tobacco products. Marketers of these e-cigarettes even describe them as a means to help smokers quit their habit. \nHowever, since e-cigarettes have not been scientifically tested, there is no credible evidence that these products are safe for human consumption OR that they are effective at helping smokers or other tobacco users quit. Unlike other nicotine replacement cessation aides like the patch or the gum, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved e-cigs as cessation aids.\nYOUTH USAGE RATES!!!\n","7":"The drip tip is what the users puts in their mouth. Here you can see how again, they can “customize” their e-cigarette to reflect their individual style.\n","13":"Why school policy might be necessary even though we have state laws because:\n*There is always a chance that state laws could be changed. This may reverse the regulation that includes e-cigarettes as part of the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act. If that happened, people would be able to use them indoors at public places. There is also a chance that the age restriction could be changed.\n","2":"Data is from the Prevention Needs Assessment, 2013\nFor grades 8, 10, 12\nIt is exciting to report that since 1999, the youth cigarette-smoking rate in Utah has decreased by 50%. Today in Utah, only 5.9% of students, grades 8-12 report having used cigarettes in the last 30 days. In the Bear River Health District, (which includes Cache County, Box Elder County and Rich Counties), that rate is even lower at only 3.9%! \n \nHowever, a new product, the e-cigarette, has entered the market and has become very popular with the teen population. These e-cigs are being perceived as a safe, healthy alternative to smoking. As such, the usage rates of e-cigs have skyrocketed! Within 1 year, the experimentation rate of e-cigarettes has more than doubled our “traditional” cigarette usage rate. \n","8":"Another component….the lanyard!\nMany e-cigarettes will wear this around their neck. And what does it look like? A pen!\nHaving it around your neck, you can discretely hide it down their shirt, take a quick puff off of the e-cig and put it right back down their shirt.\n","14":"Counselor could help connect the person to services to help them quit. A principal or school resource officer would handle the legal aspects of possession of an e-cigarette. \n","3":"First e-cig appeared on scene 7 years ago. At that time, they were designed to Look like a traditional cigarette. But now, they are fancy, bright colored, gadget-like, See themselves at “vapors” not smokers\nHow do they work??? Next slides will show you…..\n","9":"E-juice. Electronic juice. Four components that goes into the juice. Mix in their store. Buy them in big containers off the internet. Nicotine levels 2.4 they tell customers is the equivalent of a regular cigarette. 1.2 is same as a light cigarette. \nPropylene Glycol –\nVegetable Glycerin -\nLevels of nicotine – 1.2 is like a “light cigarette” 2.4 is like a “traditional cigarette”\nSince the FDA has not evaluated e-cigarettes, we do not know the safety of these components. More research is needed to determine what inhaling these components will do to human lungs, heart or cardiovascular system. \nWe do know the health effects of nicotine use. \nNicotine is\nA highly addictive drug\nRaises blood pressure and cholesterol, increasing likelihood of stroke or heart attack\nLethal – for children just 10 mg of nicotine could poison them\nPromotes insulin resistance which increases risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease\n","4":"A typical e-cigarette consists of a battery….here a battery is shown so that you can see how they can be customized to reflect the user’s personality…\nThere have been reports of these exploding, burning the user.\n","10":"Partial list of the flavorings that can be purchased. Like a snow cone stand!!\nThis wide array of flavored nicotine increases the appeal of e-cigarettes to youth. \n"}
