 for time immemorial -- huddled together in groups -- our habit
  of sharing information.
So sit back and forget about the Internet for a while :
 it all started when barely-human apes learnt to hunt in packs.
Next was the discovery of fire, and our ancestors gathered in
front of fires for a millennium after that.
 Then came cities and ships, and we traversed the globe, still
huddled together for warmth and that general feeling of
  goodness.
 We've hugged each other excitedly at sports events, consoled
each other in times of misery, and continually found new ways
to form cuddly, warm groups of like-minded individuals.
There's always been a group even the squarest of us can fit into
—sort of like in a college/Court canteen and used to share
  jocks/etc.

A PC was, and is, a very personal gadget.
When it first became popular sometime in the '90s, it
was something you could use for hours or days—but
 always alone.
Gaming was addictive, Windows was fun to use. And
MS Office let you get work done so much faster than
when you still used books. We got addicted.

A far cry from the lonely machine, the PC was now able
to put you in touch with people from any where at all. It
 started with e-mail: if you knew a person's e-mail
address, you could send him or her a letter in an instant
 regard-less of geography.
Then IRC had the concept of channels (basically chat
rooms), it wasn't long before people started creating
channels based on interests. This is perhaps where the
world got their first glimpse of “social networking”.
There were hundreds of like-minded individ-uals talking
and sharing information based on interests—in real-
time. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant
                      Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 4
This has made communication between the
strangers easier than ever. Chatting is one of the
more popular activities on the Internet- people
can talk to anyone across the world.
Introduction of social online networking sites has
 facilitated communication. These are web-sites
where users can create a profile and connect that
profile to others to form an explicit personal
 network.

 In its simplest form, the
 term ‘social network’
 refers to a network of
 people who choose to
 form ‘links’ between each
 other, perhaps based on
 common factors such as
 values, friendship, ideas,
 interests or trade.

 For some people, ‘social’
 networking implies trivia,
 gossip and non-work
 related activities.

Social networks include everything from project
teams to sports teams, communities of practice to
working groups, informal old boy networks to
women’s bar associations, trade unions to alumni
groups, etc. etc., Consider for a moment where you
turn for information, knowledge or references.

 When you accept friend request from strangers, you put
  yourself at severe risk.
 The men at other side start exchanging words very cordially
and within some days you have a faith on them.
 Then they start the mind game and start gathering more
personal information. If they get to know your email address,
they could go to email account and click on “forget password”.
And the system will ask a security question like “your
favourite teacher, your first phone number etc”. Unknowingly,
you have already shared this information with them. So now
they have access to your email account. This task will be
much easier if you set your date of birth, school or college
name as email password. Faculty at Yeshwant

 Social networking users face severe health risk because they
reduce face-to-face contact and become addicted in a virtual
  world of relationships.
 In India people check their Facebook profile before getting out
of bed in the morning and 35% check their accounts several
  times in a day.
 SNS have played a significant role in making people become
more isolated. Lack of face-to-face contact could alter the way
genes work, upset immune responses, hormonal levels, function
of arteries and influence mental performance.
 This could increase the risk of health problems like cancer,
  strokes, heart disease and dementia.

1. You start losing sleep over SNS
     and that hampers your daily

2. Spend more than an hour on SNS.
3. You become obsessed with your

4. You tend to ignore work and use

5. When you think of going a day

                 Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 24
 The beginning of social networking sites started to make
contacts with people and build a network of healthy
  relationship in the society.
 But now it seems offering cybercriminals a great advantage to
  target victims.
 Rajesh and his family (Pune) were out of home for treatment of
his son in Hydrabad. Instead of making phone calls to
everyone, he was updating on Facebook message about son’s
health. Someone read his Facebook message and burgled their
  home during this time.
 Paedophiles are using social networking sites because that is
where they can lure the victim willingly. Teens easily believe in
Love with the person they met online but actually they are
falling to a trap ofby Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

                                   predator. 25
 “Right to Privacy” is an implied right under Fundamental
Rights. The Constitution of India does not expressly
recognize the right to privacy but at the same time this
right has been spelt out by our Supreme Court from the
provision of Article 21 which deals with the right to life
 and liberty.

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

 Privacy is closely related to Data Protection.
 An individual’s details like name, address, interests, family, etc.
are often available on various web sites. Passing on such
information to interested parties can lead to invasion of
  privacy.
 In India, data protection is governed by The Information
  Technology Act.
 The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 contains
provisions which recognize privacy protection and few which
encroach upon the privacy rights. The sections that recognize
the privacy issues are Section 43A and Section 72A. However,
Section 69 and Section 69B encroach upon the right to privacy

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant
                                Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 27
 These sections are condensed as follows. Section 43A
provides scope for introducing the definition of “Sensitive
Personal Data or Information” (subject to notification),
and also imposes a responsibility for “Reasonable Security
Practice” to be followed by the data handlers.

 This section provides remedy to the person, and there is
no upper limit for the compensation to be claimed.

                            Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 28
 Another provision, Section 72A says that a person
including an intermediary could be held liable if he
discloses “personal information” which he accessed while
  providing services under a contract.

 Cyber criminals may target a specific person or just any
random individual. For example, on Facebook, by turning
on the “public search” option, one makes his/her Facebook
profile accessible to anyone who types the name in any of
the search engines, which may be intentional or
  accidental.

 The said person is liable for imprisonment for 3 years and
  fine upto 5 lakhs Rs.

                              Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 29
 The Delhi High Court in an on-going battle against Social
networking websites and other similar web forums has
ruled that unhealthy content on such websites is required
to be removed, failure of which would lead to a total ban
  of the same.

 The Indian government also sanctioned the court’s stance
after reviewing all the evidence and being satisfied that
they can be proceeded against as per section 153-A
(promoting enmity between classes), 153-B(in place of
worship) and 295-A(Maliciously insulting the religion or
the religious belief of any class) of the Indian Penal Code

 The IT Amendment Act 2008 brings about various
sweeping changes in the existing Cyberlaw. The Provisions
dealing with offensive or objectionable contents are

 Section 66A (posting of offending content) (3 Yrs.& Fine ),

 Section 66E (posting on the networking site the image of a
private area of any person), (3 Yrs.,/Fine 2 lakh or both)

 Section 67 (transmission of obscene material in electronic

 Section 67B (Child pornographic content). (5 Yr. & 10L) – (10

 Further, Section 69 gives power to the Central Government
for interception or monitoring or decryption of any

 Section 69A provides for power of the central government or
any of its officers to direct the blocking of any content on the

Whether to use social networking site or not is an
individual decision to many. But you must be aware of
certain things when discussing your private life in
 public.

 These are some of the tips that can make you and your
family safe on the networking sites.

1. Change the profile privacy now. Keep your information
accessible only to people in your friend list.

2. Don’t accept friendship request from strangers. Many
often we judge a particular person online, by his/her
profile picture and personal information. This is the first
mistake that cyber criminals wanted us to do.

3. Don’t post very personal information on the profile. It
includes your email id, date of birth, contact number,
home address and information about your family
     members.

4. Be cautious while posting your photo. Ensure your
photo background doesn’tat Yeshwant about your actual

5. Don’t post your current location when on a tour. Posting this
information on social networking site is just like inviting
   criminals.
6. Don’t post negative things about your life. This is just like
maligning your own image. Your friends are monitoring your
activity and one such mistake can cause havoc in future.
7. Make distance from your ex’s profile. This might seem you little
cruel, but once you decide to quit a relationship there is no
meaning again visiting your ex-partner’s profile. If you want to
have a good life in future, then unfriend your ex from friend list.
8. Don’t substitute real friends with virtual friends. Facebook is a
great tool to connect new people across world. But they can never
be your real friends. You need real friends to enhance your social
image and reduce stress and anxiety.
9. Avoid using Social networking sites in work hours. When you try
to use social networking sites during work hour, it not only affects

Lately I have been reflecting on the fact that we all as a society
sometimes depend upon technology a little too much.
Technology has made our lives so much easier and more simple,

  • 2.  for time immemorial -- huddled together in groups -- our habit of sharing information. So sit back and forget about the Internet for a while :  it all started when barely-human apes learnt to hunt in packs. Next was the discovery of fire, and our ancestors gathered in front of fires for a millennium after that.  Then came cities and ships, and we traversed the globe, still huddled together for warmth and that general feeling of goodness.  We've hugged each other excitedly at sports events, consoled each other in times of misery, and continually found new ways to form cuddly, warm groups of like-minded individuals. There's always been a group even the squarest of us can fit into —sort of like in a college/Court canteen and used to share jocks/etc. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 2
  • 3. A PC was, and is, a very personal gadget. When it first became popular sometime in the '90s, it was something you could use for hours or days—but always alone. Gaming was addictive, Windows was fun to use. And MS Office let you get work done so much faster than when you still used books. We got addicted. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 3
  • 4. A far cry from the lonely machine, the PC was now able to put you in touch with people from any where at all. It started with e-mail: if you knew a person's e-mail address, you could send him or her a letter in an instant regard-less of geography. Then IRC had the concept of channels (basically chat rooms), it wasn't long before people started creating channels based on interests. This is perhaps where the world got their first glimpse of “social networking”. There were hundreds of like-minded individ-uals talking and sharing information based on interests—in real- time. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 4
  • 5. This has made communication between the strangers easier than ever. Chatting is one of the more popular activities on the Internet- people can talk to anyone across the world. Introduction of social online networking sites has facilitated communication. These are web-sites where users can create a profile and connect that profile to others to form an explicit personal network. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 5

If they get to know your email address, they could go to email account and click on “forget password”. And the system will ask a security question like “your favourite teacher, your first phone number etc”. Unknowingly, you have already shared this information with them. So now they have access to your email account. This task will be much easier if you set your date of birth, school or college name as email password. This might seem you little cruel, but once you decide to quit a relationship there is no meaning again visiting your ex-partner’s profile. If you want to have a good life in future, then unfriend your ex from friend list. 8. Don’t substitute real friends with virtual friends. Facebook is a great tool to connect new people across world.
