• East India Company, later of the British Indian
  Army, contributed to the birth and growth of
  the Indian railways

• 1890 : Great Indian Peninsula Railway became a government
  owned company.

• Various independent kingdoms began to have their own rail
  systems.

• By 1929, there were 66,000 km (41,000 miles) of railway lines
  serving most of the districts in the country.

• By 1946 all rail systems had been taken over by the
  government.

                          (US$ 3.63 billion).

  • 4. In India… • The railways were a group of privately owned companies • East India Company, later of the British Indian Army, contributed to the birth and growth of the Indian railways
