This is a talk I gave at Ciudad Universitaria de Buenos Aires on July 23rd, 2015. The idea was expressing how it felt for me (and my co-worker fellows at Inaka) start using Swift in our projects. The talk has three aims: - Speaking a bit about Swift's history. - Communicating how our mindset as iOS developers has changed from an attitude point of view, rather than technical. - Speaking briefly about one of Swift's features (optionals) and showing some code.

There are many things that make Ruby a great language, but above all else, the beautiful and friendly syntax. A perfect exemplar of this is the case statement: case enables a flexible method of dispatching on an object that is both natural and intuitive. But case can't do it alone. No, it requires the help of it's little-known and under-appreciated sidekick the === (threequals) operator. In this talk we'll dive into this fascinating corner of the Ruby language and see what trouble we can cause with the humble threequals. We'll go over the basics of how it interacts with case, and then go into some tips and tricks for making the most of this useful bit of syntax, and ultimately create a little pattern matching mini-language as a demonstration.

For the past few years in the functional Scala community, the standard approach for adding features to an effect type (features like logging, stateful updates, or accessing config) has been Monad Transformers (EItherT, OptionT, WriterT, ReaderT, etc.). While elegant and proven, monad transformers were imported directly from Haskell, and in Scala, they have poor ergonomics and poor performance. Using tagless-final on transformers can eliminate some of the boilerplate, but cannot improve performance, and tagless-final makes it insanely hard to locally introduce and eliminate features. In this presentation, John will introduce an alternate approach he coined ‘effect rotation’, which shares most of the power of monad transformers, but with better ergonomics and no loss of performance. You will see how to use the ZIO library that John created to composably add different features into the ZIO effect type, to solve the same problems as monad transformers, but in a way that feels natural and idiomatic for Scala.

The slide to the Java User Group Talk Exploring Ceylon from Gavin King. Abstrakt: Ceylon is a new programming language designed for writing large programs in teams. The language emphasizes readability, modularity, typesafety, and tooling. Ceylon programs execute on Java and JavaScript virtual machines. In this session, Gavin King will talk about the ideas behind Ceylon and demonstrate the language, its type system, its module architecture, and its IDE. Speaker: Gavin King leads the Ceylon project at Red Hat. He is the creator of Hibernate, a popular object/relational persistence solution for Java, and the Seam Framework, an application framework for enterprise Java. He's contributed to the Java Community Process as JBoss and then Red Hat representative for the EJB and JPA specifications and as lead of the CDI specification. Now he works full time on Ceylon, polishing the language specification, developing the compiler frontend, and thinking about the SDK and future of the platform. He's still a fan of Java, and of other languages, especially Smalltalk, Python, and ML.

New languages are inspired by existing languages: every generation learns from the previous one. Kotlin is no exception: its design is based substantially on the designs of languages such as Java, Scala, C#, Groovy, Python, Nice, etc. This talk will explain which parts of the design are inspired by which languages and what Kotlin does differently in each case.

After 20 years, Java seems to feel the weight of the years and his syntax it isn't evolved as we live. But the JVM it is always a stable environment and it is often in production everywhere. In the past years, there were many languages based on the JVM, but they don't have a lot of success. Kotlin conquered Android and, now, thanks to an easy syntax many and big companies behind it, may be used also in web development, also as full stack language. During this talk, we will give a look the language and how to use it to develop a production ready web application. Failure testing is a fundamental piece of Twitter’s reliability engineering. Over the years, we developed a rich toolchain that allows us to detect and fix scalability problems long before they happen. In this talk, we’ll cover some of the strategies we employ and discuss our always evolving approach to API stress testing and its “unit test” equivalent, redline testing.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
