2. TWO RESEARCH PROJECTS
• the.GTO.project
Construction and normalisation of gender online among
tweens in Estonia and Sweden
http://mt.sh.se/gto
• UNGMODs
Multimodal figurations among young people – how digital
media can be used for expression and reflection
http://mt.sh.se/UNGMODs
3. the.GTO.project
http://mt.sh.se/gto
The aim the project is to study how gender is created, expressed and
normalized in online environments among young people/tweens (age 10 to 14
years old) in Estonia and Sweden. Furthermore, what meaning this creation of
identity has in their everyday life.
Three themes are focused in the project:
How gender is expressed and normalized in online environments?
What meanings has the online construction of gender, for the young
in their everyday life?
How do young people use media technology tools to complement
verbal and written expressions in the shaping of the personal self?
4. UNGMODs
http://mt.sh.se/UNGMODs
The aim of the project is to study how young people (13 to 17 y.o.) use
information and communication technologies (ICT) in formal and informal
everyday learning environments. Special attention on how the possibilities of
multimodal figurations (”gestaltung”) supports the subjects’ critical reflections
on learning, knowledge building and identity development.
In the project, three themes will be focused:
How are digital media used in school?
How are digital media used in leisure time?
How can digital media be used in supporting other types of expressions
than written text?
5. SOME REFLECTIONS

examples/suggestions
the.GTO.project
Interviews with tweens (app. 10 to 14 y.o.) on the meaning of SNS (social networking services)
in their life, with special attention to identity construction.
Semiotic analysis of images/user presentation, as presented on social networking services (SNS).
UNGMODs
Interviews with app. 15-17 y.o. youngsters on their leisure time use of digital media, paying special
attention to multimodal figurations (”gestaltung”).
Observations on how app. 15-17 y.o. youngsters use digital media in a specific context leisure
time/out of school (i.e. public transportation; when doing homework; party; café, etc.)
about me\n\nmy interest\nchildren, new media (or conditions in contemporary society) - their conditions of primary interest\n\nchildren - new culture - appropriation of tools --> emancipation - new ways of acting/thinking - human unpredictable creativity\n\nand also; \n\nmedia user - consumer and producer - creates ”texts”, as involved in the building (or furnishing) of digital spaces, \n

observations of activities, interviews, etc\n\nformal and informal learning situations: \n\nh1: school ≠ leisure time\nh2: children/young people more creative\nh3: school benefit from a ”dialogue” with out of school context\n--> dialogue with the partners, i.e. ”design” (didactical design ...)\n\n--> rather little, seldom, etc. children do something ”interesting”\n\nThe school need, urgently, to change! \n
a. children spontaneous \ninformed consent? school! ... \nlike to be creative when setting up studies design - the important thing is to capture interesting data (then we have to reflect on reserach effects, etc.)\n\nb. what are they actually doing? and what does it mean for them? (c.f. Asplund - on social sciences; essense - what does it mean?)\nMany ideas, many conceptions - N-gen, Digital Natives, etc. That they are digitally competent - but are they? And if so; in what ways?\n\nOr is it that we have difficulties in seeing it, as we are catpured in our own experiences, concepts, conceptions? \n\nAffordances? Appropriaton? \n\n\nc. tweens -- consumers! inbetween - something else ... \nrelational identity \n--> GTO: consuming, creating body, identity, etc\n\nHave access, and are at least ideologically ”motor” in the idea of the need of changes (societal, educational, etc.)\n
