Executive Summary,
     Small is the New Big is a book that helps marketers and
entrepreneurs stay competitive in a world of expanding media
outlets. It’s not a long narrative with tons of research. It’s a
compilation of blog postings, magazine columns, and e-books
eight years in the making. The book was designed by Seth Godin
who is deemed “America’s Greatest Marketer.” Each page offers
stories and ideas that can change how you work, what you buy,
and how you see the world.

     The book explores three main themes. One, “Small is the
new big” is expressed in terms of how, when, and why advertise.
Two, “Authentic stories spread and last, but lies get exposed
faster than ever” concentrates on reputation control, or public
relations. Three, “The ability to change fast is the single best
asset for any person or organization.” These themes are
represented in relatable stories, real facts, and marketing tips
from Godin himself. Overall, the book is a fine tool for
entreprenuers and marketers now, then, and on their way up.

more attention into the top of the funnel. However, the graph
above is an example of how keeping your funnel filled can
explode your budget pretty quickly.

Ford.com is supported by more than a $100 million dollars worth
of advertising annually. Squidoo.com is a community-driven site.
             In this case, the small budget was the new big budget.

station in town, the

county, the only all
girl’s school etc.


• Only is very comforting. Only eliminates competition, provides
price insulation, and boosts egos. Only, alas, is in short
supply these days. •

The challenge of being remarkable is being fast enough and
brave enough to embrace the new, not just rely on being the only.
                    In this case, adapting to new media is key.

An idea must be sent and received to spread.
No one spreads an idea unless:
• They understand it
• They want it to spread
• They believe that spreading it will enhance their power
(reputation, income, friendships) or their piece of mind
• The effort necessary to send the idea is less than the benefits

No one “gets” an idea unless..
• The first impression demands further investigations
• They already understand the foundation ideas necessary to
get the new idea
• They trust or respect the sender enough to invest the time
         In this case, interesting, authentic stories will spread and last.

        I recommend this book..
Especially if you are like me and haven’t read Godin’s blog much



Small is the New Big is a fun, easy read that inspires new ideas
and a new way to market.

Seth’s language is clear and he writes stories that we can all
relate to. His spurts of humor make it an enjoyable book.

I especially liked how the book was designed. The”chapters”
are so short that you can pick it up at any time without too much
commitment. You won’t feel lost or feel like you’re reading in
circles. You just get it, and you take what you want from the
tidbits of knowledge. This is one of those books you keep on your
shelf. You never know when you’ll need one of Godin’s
small ideas.

However, the graph above is an example of how keeping your funnel filled can explode your budget pretty quickly. Ford.com is supported by more than a $100 million dollars worth of advertising annually. Squidoo.com is a community-driven site. In this case, the small budget was the new big budget. 07

The only all-rock radio station in town, the only bakery in the county, the only all girl’s school etc. • Only is very comforting. Only eliminates competition, provides price insulation, and boosts egos. Only, alas, is in short supply these days. • The challenge of being remarkable is being fast enough and brave enough to embrace the new, not just rely on being the only. In this case, adapting to new media is key. 08

No one spreads an idea unless: • They understand it • They want it to spread • They believe that spreading it will enhance their power (reputation, income, friendships) or their piece of mind • The effort necessary to send the idea is less than the benefits No one “gets” an idea unless.. • The first impression demands further investigations • They already understand the foundation ideas necessary to get the new idea • They trust or respect the sender enough to invest the time In this case, interesting, authentic stories will spread and last. 09

Especially if you are like me and haven’t read Godin’s blog much Small is the New Big is a fun, easy read that inspires new ideas and a new way to market. Seth’s language is clear and he writes stories that we can all relate to. His spurts of humor make it an enjoyable book. I especially liked how the book was designed. The”chapters” are so short that you can pick it up at any time without too much commitment. You won’t feel lost or feel like you’re reading in circles. You just get it, and you take what you want from the tidbits of knowledge. This is one of those books you keep on your shelf. You never know when you’ll need one of Godin’s small ideas. ***** I give it five stars. ***** 10
