Hearing Tests Explained
When you suspect that you might have
hearing loss or another problem with
your ears, one of the first steps in the
diagnosis is a hearing test. This allows
your audiologist to assess what you
can and can’t hear which ultimately
provides a better understanding of
what the underlying problems may be.
Upon arrival at your hearing test, you’ll fill out some introductory
paperwork and spend some time talking with your audiologist
about why you’re coming in for an exam. This is your chance to
tell your audiologist what you’ve noticed about your hearing,
which can help dictate what types of hearing tests you’ll be given.
Your audiologist also may look in your ears to determine if
blockage may be causing problems.
The pure tone test is probably the one you think of when you
hear about hearing tests, and this test is generally part of your
visit. You will be in a soundproof setting and be exposed to tones
at a variety of frequencies and volumes. Your audiologist will ask
you to acknowledge each noise you hear, perhaps by placing an
item in a cup near you or saying a word. This test determines the
threshold at which you hear each frequency.
Additional tests include spoken word because difficulty hearing
speech is one of the major complaints of people coming in for a
hearing test. You may hear someone speaking over background
noise and be asked to repeat what they’re saying.

Some hearing aid providers may ask you to bring a close friend or
relative with you so you can also perform the test with a familiar
voice.
You shouldn’t feel like you have to be nervous about a hearing
test or perform well. Instead, you should just relax and follow
your audiologist’s instructions.
