History of Hearing Aids Milledgeville GA
1. History of Hearing Aids – A Brief Summary
Hearing loss in one form or another has affected many people over many
years. People suffered from hearing loss due to genetics, old age, damage
or disease. There were a number of devices developed to help to overcome
these impairments. Hearing aids have been the most successful and
effective device to address this problem so we’ll discuss a brief history of
hearing aids.
The first hearing aids were developed about two hundred years ago. They
came about in the form of ear trumpets which were large horn shaped
devices which could direct sounds in to the ear of someone suffering from
hearing loss. It helped to amplify the sounds and made it easier for that
person to follow conversations or discern different sounds.
Of course this device wasn’t very portable or easy to carry around. But at
least it provided some relief for those who suffered from moderate to severe
hearing loss.
The development of the telephone in the late 1800’s paved the way for
amplification of sound through electrical means. The telephone was
essentially a device which could amplify sound through a carbon microphone
and a power source from a battery.
In the early 1920’s, vacuum tube technology allowed hearing aid devices to
function fairly well. It could amplify the sound in an efficient manner. But
these devices were still quite large and cumbersome to be practical on a day
to day basis.
Fortunately the development of the transistor played a pivotal role in
miniaturizing hearing aids. They enabled these devices to worn comfortably
around the ear and provided a much better solution to hearing loss.
Beginning in the 1950’s hearing aids featured transistor technology and
continuous refinements from that point resulted in ever smaller and more
effective products.
2. The advent of digital technology in the 1990’s brought about even more
compact designs as well as the ability to provide a much better listening
experience. Feedback and extraneous noise could be more effectively
filtered out. A notable advance was the ability to allow users to discern
conversation in noisy environments; this was a significant challenge for
earlier devices.
The technology and features of hearing aids continues to evolve and
improve, thereby bringing about greater effectiveness and improved quality
of life for its users.
