Receiver In The Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids
1. Receiver In The Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids
One of the newest subsets of behind-the-ear (BTE)
hearing aid styles is the receiver-in-the-canal (RIC)
hearing aid. Nearly invisible, while still providing
superior sound quality, RICs are an excellent choice for
many who are seeking better hearing in a small,
unobtrusive package! You may be a great candidate for
this style!
Also known as receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) hearing aids, RICs are purported
to improve the quality of sound over similar open-fit BTEs available in
today’s market. Like open-fit BTEs, RICs have a similar fit. A small casing,
housing the internal workings of the hearing instrument, sits atop the outer
visible portion of the ear.
This casing is usually low profile and nearly invisible. With traditional and
open-fit BTEs, this casing houses the entire mechanics of the hearing
instrument and sends the signal to the ear by means of a thin tube
connected to a small flexible dome or custom ear piece.
With RICs, the receiver (small loudspeaker) actually sits in the outer ear
canal, and the tubing connecting the behind the ear portion is replaced by a
small thin wire leading to the receiver. A small flexible dome or custom ear
piece houses the receiver, protecting the speaker as it sits in the ear. This
deep placement of the receiver has been shown to provide better, more
natural sound quality.
