9. Tablets? Gemakkelijk!
Owen, 7, does not have the
strength to maneuver a
computer mouse, but … iPad …
he aimed his left pointer finger
at an icon on the screen,
touched it — just barely — and
opened the application … tried
several computerized
communications … but the iPad
was the first that worked on the
first try.

We have to make a shift to the future, where we first look with the patients what the needs are they have, then look how much they can do themselves, whether or with help of technology, and finally introduce manual labour.

Front entrance is patient controlled, a camera shows the patient who’s at the door, with the video being streamed to the patient tablet, to ensure he/she can see this anywhere in the house / in his wheelchair. The black box is a automated card entry system, and each card is programmed by the occupant. The occupant can assign periods, e.g. between 7-9am, to each card, thus controlling who can enter his home when. This way he enables the home care to come in in the morning to assist in getting out of bed, but withhold them entry the rest of the day.
This rotating kitchen is an invention Siza holds a patent for, together with a Dutch designer, RuudJan Kokke. It is a difficult kitchen to create, as it rotates eccentric. This is designed this way to allow someone in a wheelchair to get under the kitchen worktop enough. The rotating allows them to have the kitchen come to them, instead of driving around your kitchen a lot.
It has been build in first prototype for about €8K and the total square foot of this kitchen is about as big as a regular kitchen, therefore also interesting for all people that live in a small home.
