EVANGELISM vs. DISCIPLESHIP
• “The Lord isn't really being
slow about his promise to
return, as some people
think. No, he is being
patient for your sake. He
does not want anyone to
perish, so he is giving
more time for everyone to
repent.” – 2 Peter 3:9

EVANGELISM vs. DISCIPLESHIP
• "To evangelize is so to present Christ Jesus in the
power of the Holy Spirit, that men shall come to put
their trust in God through Him, to accept Him as their
Saviour and serve Him as their King in the fellowship
of His Church." ‐ Archbishop's Committee on
evangelism in 1918
• “To evangelize is to invite others through the power
of the Holy Spirit to put their trust in God, through
Jesus Christ, to accept Jesus as their Savior and follow
Him as their leader in everyday life as members of a
local church and inspire them to do the same.”
Heaven’s Citizens Christian Centre 2014.
EVANGELISM vs. DISCIPLESHIP
• The Evangelism System begins when an unchurched
person is prompted by the spirit to attend your
church and ends when the person follows Jesus
Christ and is baptized publicly.

problem”

Personal Evangelism
Personal Evangelism Area ‐ Giving the Congregation
tools to invite their friends.
Equip people to do ministry.
Andrew found His brother Simon and told him. John
1:41‐42
Give them an opportunity to see and to seize the
opportunity. We can’t make people thirsty, we point
them to where they can find fulfillment for the thirst.
Give people tools, give them training and give them
timelines. People do the urgent, not the important.
Principles of Personal Evangelism
Principles of personal evangelism
1. Imitation – lead the way. People like to follow what they
see you do.
2. Urgency – If you want people to invite their friends to
church, make it urgent. Make it more effective by giving it
urgency.
3. Stress and Release – Alternate, stress/release, ebb/flow.
Equip in the off months. Stress 3‐4 months a year.
Everything was wired to grow with stress and relief – apply
it to all areas. Stress and release.
4. Celebration – That which gets rewarded gets repeated.
Thank People, Share the numbers, share the stories. Make it
a celebrated point in the Church.
5. Expectation – Your people are more likely to bring your
friends to church if they know what to expect.
10 Effective Invite Tools (+one so‐so)
Model the way
Lead church attenders to pray for the unchurched
Have people write down the names of unchurched friends
Utilize invitation cards
Engage members in entry level outreach evangelism
Use big days or special events
Encourage friend invites to baby dedications, baptisms, testimonials
Train people to share their faith
Provide ‘air cover’ for personal invites through promotion
Utilize word of mouth marketing (e‐invites, new to the church pages)
Reward people who invite their friends
(movie ticket giveaway, Starbucks cards)
Mass Promotion
MASS Promotion.. Mark 4:4‐9
Ratio is lower, but it’s a good compliment. Air Cover ☺
Identify your best fields – right time, right place.
Leave the birds, the sun and the thorns. Learn where the good soil is.
Pay attention to those who want to hear. The fertile soil. Who is like me, who is not
churched.
Under Tension, During Transition, In Trouble – Good fields.
2000 seeds is not enough. Think Big. Do like the wise sower. Example of promotion
seeds. – Direct Mail. What’s the riskiest thing we can every do?, BillBoard?, Cinema Ads,
Door to Door, Press Release, Be creative, try something, reach out to people. Think
exponentially. (Letters to every home), Expect a proportional return.
Your preparation ties in with God sending people to you. Get ready.
Be Consistent. – do what you do every time
Be Clear – Be clear what you want them to do, who they are e.t.c., be clear that you are
inviting them to their church, tell them what you want them to do. The end result of
promotion is to get them to come to church. Be Creative. Don’t be afraid to be creative.
Be Confined. Don’t try to be all things to all people. Go after a genre.
Be Confident, the confident that it will work. Be confident that God will use these to
reach people, the help of the Holy Spirit. 2 Cor 9:10

CONCLUSION
Why do we do this work?
“So Jesus used this illustration: ‘If you had one hundred sheep, and one of them
strayed away and was lost in the wilderness, wouldn't you leave the ninety‐nine
others to go and search for the lost one until you found it? And then you would
joyfully carry it home on your shoulders. When you arrived, you would call together
your friends and neighbors to rejoice with you because your lost sheep was found.
In the same way, heaven will be happier over one lost sinner who returns to God
than over ninety‐nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away!’” – Luke
15:3 – 7
“When they saw him, they worshiped him – but some of them still doubted! Jesus
came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given complete authority in heaven and on
earth.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach these new disciples to
obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always,
even to the end of the age.’" – Matthew 28:18 – 20
“So don't get tired of doing what is good. Don't get discouraged and give up, for we
will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time.”

Learning Focus
• The church should be a family
expecting Guests. What changes
do you need to make to
accommodate guests.
• 1. Assimilation is about retaining
first timers, not about marketing
to people outside.
• 2. Strategically helping people
take next steps. – a logical plan
for moving you from where you
are to where you want to be.
• 3. Transforming Lives – this
happens as they grow towards
maturity.
3 STEP Process
• From being first time guests to becoming  second time
guests
• From being second time guests to becoming  regular
attenders
• From being regular attenders to becoming  fully
developing members
Step #1: From 1st Time Guest to 2nd Time Guest
• A. PRE‐SERVICE: First Contact : The first impression a person develops of a church
and of the people who make up the church is the most important impression. It’s
very difficult to shake a first impression.
1.    Greeted   A first time guest wants to be greeted with a smile in a friendly and
welcoming way without being bombarded or made to feel uncomfortable.
2. Directed
A first time guest wants to be directed to where he or she needs to go in a simple
and polite way.  Having no direction adds anxiety and greatly reduces the positive
impact of a church’s first impression.
3. Treated
A first time guest wants to be treated with respect and in a way that makes him
or her feel like the church is glad that they are there.
*An important way to do this is by making high‐quality food and/or snacks readily
available.  This makes a great first impression and is something that will pleasantly
surprise the first time guest.  They won’t forget that your church cared enough to feed
them.
4. Seated
Ushers are very important to making a first time guest feel comfortable and to
helping them form a positive first impression of the church.
Step #1: From 1st Time Guest to 2nd Time Guest
First contact areas you can control
1. ‐ Greeted (you can control how someone is greeted. A smiling face that welcomes a
person without bombarding them but makes them feel comfortable. Let them be
greeted warmly, not over the top. It’s great to see you today, We are glad you are
here. (SET up a greeter ministry – have outgoing people do this role, also find a way to
check this out from time to time) Go over with them what they need to do every
week.
2. – Directed (shown where to go, make it simple to know where to go). Have signs
and clear directions. Make it clear once they walk in. People want to be directed to the
rest rooms, and to the children’s ministry. Walk them over there, make sure someone
guides them and walks them over to the area.
3. – treated – how are they treated. How do you treat them with respect. Clean the
bathrooms, deodorizer. Get the children’s area cleaning. Analogy of Restaurant. Let
people feel special. Make high quality snack readily available. You can control the
food, make them leave memorably. You have a chance here to wow people. ($169
from marketing to get one person to church – how much does a donut cost)
4. – Seated – who do I sit by? Get someone to walk with them and help them get a
seat. Make the ushers walk the people down and help them to get a good seat. Help
them feel comfortable. Remove their anxiety, worries and fears.
Define for the volunteers exactly how you want it done. People want to know exactly
what you want them to do. They want a format and a structure. It frees them up to do
it better.
Start on time. Think through when your people get there. Make the most of your first
7 minutes. Get your Greeters up 20 mins before.
First Impressions
• Note:  Remember, regardless of
music performance or message
deliverance, a person must be
welcomed into the church in a
friendly and helpful way or the first
impression of the church will be a
negative one, and it will be unlikely
that he/she will ever return a
second time.  The feedback we hear
over and over again from first time
guests who have a positive first
impression of The Journey is seldom
related to the music or the
message.  Most of the time it is
related to how they were made to
feel when they first walked in the
door.
• We must put our best foot forward
B.  DURING THE SERVICE:   Communication Card
1. Everyone  fills out a Communication Card every week
.
2. Everyone places the Communication Card in with the
offering.
3. Everyone  has a next step to take every week  .
The teaching pastor announces that first time guests may drop
a completed Communication Card in the offering in exchange
for a free book after the service (see Fresh Start Table below).
Note: Whether or not a church uses a Connection Card,
it is imperative that it finds an effective and non‐
threatening way to collect the contact information of all
first time guests.  Otherwise, follow‐up is impossible.
C.  POST SERVICE GIFT: Free Book/Bible
• Immediately following the service, all
first‐time guests with potential to
return to our church are offered a free
gift, usually a book, as a sign of our
appreciation for their attendance.
• Can we get people to pick up the pack
after?
• At the Guest Table in the lobby, a first
time guest who made a decision during
the service or who has questions about
the church or Christianity can find a
knowledgeable person to talk to, more
resources, and information about the
church. The table also displays free
resources such as information on
becoming a Christian, baptism,
membership, the church’s beliefs, and
new believer’s bibles.
D. Post Weekend – Follow Up
Thank them for coming and invite them back. – Think about how to do this.
Get the follow up as soon as possible. Start on Monday. Let them think about
the church immediately.
1. A first response team (Create a team for this) – Go through the cards, push
it into a database and prepare for follow‐up. This team prays for them by
name and it’s an important team. Meets on Monday.
2. 36 Hrs Response via eMail: By Monday, let them get an email.
3. 96Hrs response via Mail: Small cards, put it in the mail on Monday so they
get it on Wednesday. (Think it through) Make it handwritten for the first
time guest. Add a gift in that can be seen valuable and doesn’t cost so
much. Discount cards, a little gift, create a system for a gift that goes with
the letters. (Take out of town guests off your list for follow‐ups.)
4. One month follow up via mail: This gives another touch in their lives
(optional) Keep working on the first time list. Raving Fans, Wow Factor,  ‐
the whole idea is to create raving fans. Who would you be known as? How
can you create a wow! How will they feel, what are you communicating to
your first time guests?
POST WEEKEND FOLLOW UP SUMMARY
Note: Be creative in what gifts you might be able to
give first time guests that would “WOW” them and
encourage them to visit your church for a second
time.
Note:  Why such a fast response time with follow‐
up?  We cannot over‐emphasize how valued a first
time guest feels when contacted the day after
visiting a church for the first time.  They recognize
that they are a priority to the church and are more
likely to come back a second time.

2nd Time Guest to Regular Attender
• When an individual returns to The Journey for the
second time, we focus on two areas as being
important to encouraging that person to become a
regular attender
Step #2: From Second Time Guest to Regular Attender
DURING SERVICE:   Communication Card
• It is important that Second Time Guests fill out a
Communication Card so that you know they have returned to
your church.  Also, Second Time Guests can take a step to get
plugged in or take a next step on the back of the
Communication Card.
Step #2: From Second Time Guest to Regular Attender
Post Weekend ‐ Follow Up
1. 36Hrs Email response. – 1 Page.  (it can be a phone call)
(first time email is thank you, come back again)
the second time email thanks them for coming again, and gives a link…
to something fun to get plugged into. Community meeting e.t.c. (movie
hangout)
2. 96Hrs mail.
Post Weekend – Engagement Opportunities
Small Groups
Fun Events
Service Teams: Never too early to ask people to serve. Chose where
you can make them serve in.
People are looking for relationships and responsibilities.
Give people an opportunity to serve – it matters. People want to be
asked to do something that makes them function. No need to do a 6
weeks training for someone to serve at the car park.
Regular Attender to Member
A member is a person who has developed ownership, pride,
and identification with the church and chooses to become a
part of a spiritual family.  This requires the creation of
relationships and responsibilities within the church.
A regular attender says:   “This is the church I go to.”
A member says:   “This is MY church.”
Step #3: From Regular Attender to Member ‐ 1/3
Service Teams. Give leadership before membership. Get them to join
service groups. Teaching on Baptism and Membership. – allow people
to share their personal stories. Create signup opportunities.
Market the Next Membership Class.
Post weekend – Small Groups
Notify regular attenders about small group meetings. Target people in
small groups for membership.
Small Groups
Growing Church needs to be structured. Either for growth or control.
Semesters for small groups?
ASK people to become members. Become a master asker. Why don’t’
you come next week and serve with me. The parable of the hired
hands. Teach your people how to ask people to ask. (Never eat alone)
(The Aladdin Factor) You can train people on this.
CONCLUSION
Why do we do this work?
"Continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our
savior Jesus Christ.”
– 2 Peter 3:18
“So don't get tired of doing what is good. Don't get
discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of
blessing at the appropriate time.”
– Galatians 6:9
Our Statements
A. Purpose: Why we exist
– To make disciples of all nations ‐ rescue people
to God through Jesus, relate them to His family
as believers, raise them to Christ‐like maturity,
equip and release them to manifest God’s love
and lead in their spheres of influence, in
absolute reverence to God.

Jesus’ Estimate on Money
• "Jesus beheld how the
people cast money into the
treasury: and many that
were rich cast in much. And
a certain poor widow came,
and cast in a farthing. Jesus
called His disciples, and saith
unto them, This poor widow
hath cast more in than all:
for all they did cast in of
their abundance; but she of
her want did cast in all that
she had, even all her
living."—Mark 12. 41.
Money is a test of Character
• What is Money?
• How is it Valued differently on earth as in Heaven?
• How much does he own, vs how does he use it.
• How much he gets, vs how much he gives
• What does he give vs how does he give.
• What does he give vs what does he keep?
• Amount vs the man and his motive
• The gift vs the sacrifice
• No need of a commandment, it needs to be freewill
Money a tool to lay treasures in Heaven
• Matthew 6:19 and Matthew 19:21 – Using your
resources for God’s will give your resources eternal
value.
• Money can be used as a tool to secure your heart on
God and heaven. It’s the way to direct your heart.
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also
– Matt 6:21
The Holy Spirit and Money
• Acts 2:44,45, Acts 4:34 – In the Joy of the Holy Spirit
