                                  (8:00am -1:00pm)

Bazaar preparation: Your help is needed on Sunday, October 10, at 10:30 am
to bring out all the stored Bazaar items to the Social Hall. Throughout the year
people drop off items to be sold at the Annual Bazaar and these items are stored.
Now we need to take out these stored items. Lunch will be provided.
Also, during the week from Monday, October 11 to Saturday, October 16, beginning
at 9:00 a.m. each day, help is needed to sort, organize and price the many donated items
in preparation of the Bazaar.
Donations of useable clothing, household items, plants, baked goods, craft items,
etc. are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Please feel free to drop non-perishable
items off anytime during our office hours:
        Monday to Saturday: 8 am—5 pm Sunday & holidays: 8 am—3 pm
No furniture or bulky items will be accepted. All items must be dropped-off at the Temple.
                                                                                 Page 1
Volunteering Can Be Fun
After spending the Bon Dance days stringing BQ
sticks, making musubi’s, spam musubi’s, then selling
bentos in the evenings, the Miyamoto women (Peggy and
                                       Ethel) were still smiling.
Come join us and meet new friends, renew old
friendships. Volunteering can be fun! It also can be most
rewarding and satisfying. We need people of all ages!!

Yard person needed: We need help with our yard. If any-
one would like to volunteer some time, it would be greatly
appreciated. Bring a friend to help.
Thank you Stanley Oshita for the many hours you have
given to the beauty of our yard. Please come back if you
have some time. This photo of Mr. Oshita was taken in 2008.

Thank You (continuation from page 3)
THANK YOU also to Gene Ikeda who always helps by emptying all the
trash cans as more and more food is eaten. This year, he had a helper, his doctor,
by the name of Dr. Hingson Chun (Mrs. Hisamoto’s son-in-law). Gene always
helps with the trash detail, even during the Japan Yoshimizuko Group in June
2010 he took away empty boxes of leis as more and more of the Yoshimizuko
Group arrived and more leis given. He also helps with parking at some events.

Thank You to All Our Members!
                          By Bishop Gensho Hara
The Japan Yoshimizuko Hawaii visitation and observances were
held in Hawaii from June 25 to 27, 2010. This once-in-a-lifetime
observance was impressively held at the Betsuin and the temples of the
other islands. The Japanese delegation expressed their deep gratitude
for the utmost Aloha and cooperation from the Hawaii members.
My sincere appreciation goes to all of you as well for your hard
work in welcoming them. May I ask for your continued support for
the betterment of Hawaii Jodo Shu.
Note: We apologize to Bishop Hara for not including your Thank
You note to the Betsuin members in our September Bulletin.
Bishop Hara gave a nice Welcome address to the Japan Yoshimi-
zuko members—please see page 5

Welcome Message to the Yoshimizuko Members
                                               By Bishop Gensho Hara
                                              [Given on June 25, 2010]
Welcome to Hawaii!
On behalf of the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions, I would like to extend my heartfelt welcome
to you—the Yoshimizuko members of Chionin, Zojoji and Zendoji Grand Temples—who have all
come from far away Japan to observe the 800th Grand Memorial Service of Honen Shonin and Yoshi-
mizuko Eisho (traditional Jodo Shu choir and dance) Convention
For over one hundred years, dating back to our pioneer immigrants to later generations, members
have gathered here to pray in front of this altar on joyous occasions and in moments of sorrow. Dur-
ing World War II, which began with the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army seized the Betsuin
buildings. Only the statute of Amida Buddha could watch over the future of this temple.
When this temple was originally dedicated in 1932, the then Jodo Shu Secretary General Dr. Kai-
gyoku Watanabe, a renowned Sanskrit scholar, named the structure the “Sacred Hall of Pure Land
Buddhism.” Dr. Watanabe wrote this in large Sanskrit letters and had it engraved. Today, we can see
this engraving above the entrance to the temple.
Today, we observe the 800th Grand Memorial Service of Honen Shonin officiated by Kisho Yagi
of Zojoji Temple. Following this, we shall enjoy your Eisho performance.
Tomorrow, you will visit the temples on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai to observe Eisho
Offering Services and congregate with the Jodo Shu members of Hawaii. Through these services and
observances, I pray that we can promote the teaching of Nembutsu in Hawaii and that it will be a joy-
ous occasion for all. The members of the island temples anxiously await your arrival.
I hope that your visit to Hawaii will be a most pleasant and memorable one.

  • 5. Welcome Message to the Yoshimizuko Members By Bishop Gensho Hara [Given on June 25, 2010] Welcome to Hawaii! On behalf of the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions, I would like to extend my heartfelt welcome to you—the Yoshimizuko members of Chionin, Zojoji and Zendoji Grand Temples—who have all come from far away Japan to observe the 800th Grand Memorial Service of Honen Shonin and Yoshi- mizuko Eisho (traditional Jodo Shu choir and dance) Convention For over one hundred years, dating back to our pioneer immigrants to later generations, members have gathered here to pray in front of this altar on joyous occasions and in moments of sorrow. Dur- ing World War II, which began with the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army seized the Betsuin buildings. Only the statute of Amida Buddha could watch over the future of this temple. When this temple was originally dedicated in 1932, the then Jodo Shu Secretary General Dr. Kai- gyoku Watanabe, a renowned Sanskrit scholar, named the structure the “Sacred Hall of Pure Land Buddhism.” Dr. Watanabe wrote this in large Sanskrit letters and had it engraved. Today, we can see this engraving above the entrance to the temple. Today, we observe the 800th Grand Memorial Service of Honen Shonin officiated by Kisho Yagi of Zojoji Temple. Following this, we shall enjoy your Eisho performance. Tomorrow, you will visit the temples on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai to observe Eisho Offering Services and congregate with the Jodo Shu members of Hawaii. Through these services and observances, I pray that we can promote the teaching of Nembutsu in Hawaii and that it will be a joy- ous occasion for all. The members of the island temples anxiously await your arrival. I hope that your visit to Hawaii will be a most pleasant and memorable one. ****************************************************** ******** ******* HAPPY KEIRO KAI Front row (Sunday School): A’Marie, Himawari, Sophie, Takeru, and Strider Second row: Martha Miura (86), Tomoko Hisamoto (86), Gene Ikeda (88), Yoshiko Kitagawa (91), Kimiko Kitagawa (93), Muriel Shimoda (88), Carol Yanagihara (87), June Suzuki (86), David Miyamoto (86) Third row: Harue Maki (83), Stanley Kitajima (84), Doris Soma (84), Judy Teruya (84), Wallace Ota (85), Rev.
