The document discusses newspapers, magazines, and the press industry. It explains that newspapers primarily provide news to inform people, while magazines focus more on entertainment and one main topic like fashion or sports. The press industry includes both newspapers and magazines, which make money through advertising. Companies in the press industry are linked by advertising revenue and compete to attract more readers through better coverage. The document also notes that Rupert Murdoch owns many influential press companies around the world, making him one of the most powerful people as his views can be widely broadcasted.
2. What is a newspaper?
A newspaper is there primarily inform the
people with the news. There are 3 main types
of newspapers ; local, national and
international . Most local and international are
broadsheet tabloids are normally nationally.
What is a magazine?
A magazine is similar to a newspaper but has one major change,
it doesn’t inform us on the news it informs us on things like
fashion, sports and gadgets. Magazines are informative but more
for entertainment. It usually gives news on one big topic.
3. The press industry is mainly the newspaper/magazine industry. The press
industry has got many umbrella companies that have different names for
their subsidiaries. Like how ‘the sun’ and ‘the times’ there are many types
of newspapers and magazines. For newspapers the two most common types
are broad sheet and tabloid. Broadsheet newspapers are targeted at people
that are upper class therefore the advertising is going to go to the upper
class and vice versa for the tabloid, which is targeted at the working class
and unemployed.
4. Companies that are in the press industry do
not usually go into other industries but they
are however linked by the advertising.
5. Newspapers and magazines get money through
advertising and marketing. They get more
money for more readers, so in order to get
more readers the companies need to have
better coverage than the competition. This
makes the newspaper/magazine push up the
prices.
6. In my eyes Rupert Murdoch is one of the most
powerful people alive, if not the most
powerful person Mr Murdoch owns a lot of
companies in the press industry this means
that the press industry is significantly
influenced by him and the public are
influenced by the press. This makes Rupert
Murdoch's views broadcasted around the
world. Rupert also owns news TV channels
around the world.
