INTERACTIVE MEDIA
Social media refers to interaction
among people in which they create,
share, and/or exchange information
and ideas in virtual communities and
networks.
BY MUNIRA MOHAMED
SIZE, SHAPE AND STRUCTURE
• The interactive media industry is worth several billion
pounds annually and employs around 43,000
people, representing approximately 22% of the total
Creative Media Industries. Interactive media is not
so much a sector as a discipline, as its creation and
use is progressively becoming part of everyday
activity across all sectors of industry in general.
EXAMPLES
• Facebook is an online social networking service. Its
name comes from the colloquial name for the book
given to students at the start of the academic year
by some American university administrations to help
students get to know one another.
TWITTER
• Twitter is an online social networking and micro blogging
service that enables users to send and read "tweets", which
are text messages limited to 140 characters. Registered users
can read and post tweets but unregistered users can only
read them.
• Registered users can read and post tweets but unregistered
users can only read them. Users access Twitter through the
website interface, SMS, or mobile device app.
BBC RED BUTTON
• BBC Red Button is a branding used for digital
interactive television services provided by the BBC,
and broadcast in the United Kingdom. The service
was launched in September 1999 as BBC Text. It was
re-launched in November 2001 under the BBCi
brand and operated under this name until late
2008, when it was rebranded as BBC Red Button.
The "red button" name refers to the common
interface on remote controls for digital televisions
and set-top boxes, a red button, which launches
digital tele-text services.
OTHER MEDIA INDUSTRIES THAT USE
TWITTER TO PROMOTE
• Twitter allows companies to promote their products
on an individual level. The use of a product can be
explained in short messages that followers are more
likely to read. These messages appear on followers’
home pages. Messages can link to the product’s
website, Facebook profile, photos, videos, etc. This
link provides followers the opportunity to spend
more time interacting with the product online. This
interaction can create a loyal connection between
product and individual and can also lead to larger
advertising opportunities. Twitter promotes a
product in real-time and brings customers in.
OWNERSHIPS OF THE COMPANIES
• BBC red button-The service was launched in September
1999 as BBC Text. It was re-launched in November 2001
under the BBCi brand and operated under this name until
late 2008, when it was rebranded as BBC Red Button.
• Facebook-Facebook was founded in February 2004 by
Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow
Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew
McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
• Twitter-Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey,
Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass and by July 2006,
the site was launched.
LINKED TO INDUSTRIES
• The interactive media is linked to advertisement
and marketing as people might make pages for
example on Facebook you can make a Facebook
page of anything.
• Also its links to photography and photo imaging as
there are images used when it comes to social
media.
