        HAVERN SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

Havern School provides a specialized education program for elementary and middle
school students with diagnosed learning disabilities.

Utilizing a 4:1 student to staff ratio, experienced teachers, occupational therapists
and speech/language pathologists provide a comprehensive program of intervention
services.

Our ultimate goal is to create confident learners who will continue to achieve success
beyond Havern School.

Havern School is a nationally recognized community of professsionals, parents,
families and friends working together to address the individual academic, social, and
emotional needs of our students.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES I love teamwork! I thoroughly enjoy working with others towards a common goal; the
2008 - 2009 feeling of synergy and achieving something that could never have been accomplished
                                alone.
David C. Barth Thanks to the combined efforts of the exceptional and dedicated individuals that

Letter from the Direor
Dear Havern Families and Friends,

2008-2009 was a remarkable year at Havern School!

Each day we learned new lessons from our students as they modeled their remarkable commitment to learning through
tenacity and a willingness to strive toward their goals despite the challenges presented by learning disabilities. It
was an inspiring experience to witness the teachers and therapists as they worked with students to help them achieve
success at school and in life beyond the hallways of Havern School.

During the year, two school musicals provided all students with opportunities to showcase their acting and musical
talent. Upper school classrooms presented an enthusiastic performance of On the Radio, a collage of songs from each
decade of the 20th century. The downstairs classrooms charmed the audience with their adorable production of Bugz, a
musical about problem-solving and learning to get along with others. Students also participated in the annual art show,
science fair, student council, school spirit days, buddy breakfasts, and the Havern School community Thanksgiving
luncheon.

The first Annual Havern Hustle provided the perfect celebration for the final day of our 43rd year (2008-2009)! This
high-energy event exemplified the strong sense of community that is the hallmark of Havern School. Participants in
the “race” around Clement Park’s lake included staff, students, siblings, parents, grandparents, friends, and even a few
pets.

Havern School truly is a partnership of professionals, parents, families, and friends working together to address the
individual academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. We are grateful for the energy, time and resources
that Havern School received this year from our wide circle of friends and supporters.

Warmly,
Cathleen Pasquariello, M.Ed
Head of School

About Havern School

                     OUR HISTORY
Havern School was founded in 1966 by the Sisters of Loretto in Littleton,
Colorado. The Sisters recognized that children with learning disabilities can
succeed as students when they are provided with the appropriate environment.
The Sisters created a specialized curriculum, which along with small class size,
encouragement and support, enabled their students to reach their learning
                    potential.
Building on this strong foundation, Havern became an independent,
secular school governed by a Board of Trustees in 1970.

TODAY HAVERN IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED INDEPENDENT SCHOOL.
Havern School is a co-educational day school offering programs for students from ages
5 to14. We develop the skills of our students by focusing on their strengths while addressing individual
learning challenges. We believe strongly in the ability of every child to learn and we utilize a whole-
child approach to reach this goal.

Fundraising at Havern

THERE ARE TWO DISTINCT FUNDRAISING ENTITIES AT HAVERN.

   Parents for Havern Fundraisers
Money raised through Parents for Havern programs is used to enrich the
learning environment and foster a sense of community at the school.

   Havern School Fundraisers
Money raised through these Havern School events supports general
operating costs and specific projects. Havern School fundraisers include:

         • The Annual Fund Campaign - Revenue from the Annual Fund campaign is used to supplement the
                budget for annual operating costs.

         • The Spring Garden Party - Money raised at this event is used to underwrite specific school
               improvements.

         • The “Chip-in-for-Havern” Golf Tournament - 100% of proceeds from the golf tournament is used to
provide scholarships for Havern students. 5

Tuition covers 80% of the cost of
                                        educating a Havern student.

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide Havern with unrestricted,
expendable resources to help supplement the budget for
                                        general operating costs.

The Annual Fund Campaign is held in the fall/winter. The goal of this vital fundraiser is to achieve
6 100% participation from the Havern Board of Trustees, staff, and families. No gift is too small to
make a difference and to earn our sincere gratitude.
Endowment Funds

Endowment Funds at Havern
Endowment funds are permanent, self-
sustaining sources of funding which can
be set up to support scholarships or other
ongoing needs. These gifts are invested and
the annual earnings are used both to support
the purpose of the endowment and to build
market value. Endowment funds can grow
and provide support for Havern programs in
perpetuity.

Interest/dividend income from the Havern
School Endowment is used to fund annual
operating expenses. The endowment
principal remains intact.

Annual Fund gifts provide for the present day; Endowment Fund gifts last forever.
                                                                                        7
Both are essential to the financial health of Havern School.

I thoroughly enjoy working with others towards a common goal; the 2008 - 2009 feeling of synergy and achieving something that could never have been accomplished alone. David C. Barth Thanks to the combined efforts of the exceptional and dedicated individuals that Peter D. Bowes comprise the Havern community, this year has been an extraordinary example of Amy Burnett teamwork at Havern School. Mike Diefenderfer The Board of Trustees is successfully steering the school through these turbulent Matt Dorighi, M.D. economic times while planning for a bright future. Despite financial insecurity and some very real challenges, many generous donors and contributors not only maintained Elizabeth Hesse levels of giving but stepped it up this year; making it possible to continue the singular Cathy Mueller, SL program we provide our students AND to make some wonderful new additions. Amanda Piscopo The Havern staff always amazes me with their dedication, caring and creativity. From Erin Shrago, Psy D. the classroom teachers and therapists, to the administrative staff and the Head of School, Denise B. Small they are truly Havern School’s most valuable players! Steve Watson Thank you for a successful year, but the next season is already upon us. I hope you will John Weckbaugh be a member of our winning team as we support and cheer on Havern School and, most Don Wendell importantly, our students. • 5. Letter from the Direor Dear Havern Families and Friends, 2008-2009 was a remarkable year at Havern School! Each day we learned new lessons from our students as they modeled their remarkable commitment to learning through tenacity and a willingness to strive toward their goals despite the challenges presented by learning disabilities. It was an inspiring experience to witness the teachers and therapists as they worked with students to help them achieve success at school and in life beyond the hallways of Havern School. During the year, two school musicals provided all students with opportunities to showcase their acting and musical talent. Upper school classrooms presented an enthusiastic performance of On the Radio, a collage of songs from each decade of the 20th century. The downstairs classrooms charmed the audience with their adorable production of Bugz, a musical about problem-solving and learning to get along with others. Students also participated in the annual art show, science fair, student council, school spirit days, buddy breakfasts, and the Havern School community Thanksgiving luncheon. The first Annual Havern Hustle provided the perfect celebration for the final day of our 43rd year (2008-2009)! This high-energy event exemplified the strong sense of community that is the hallmark of Havern School. Participants in the “race” around Clement Park’s lake included staff, students, siblings, parents, grandparents, friends, and even a few pets. Havern School truly is a partnership of professionals, parents, families, and friends working together to address the individual academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. We are grateful for the energy, time and resources that Havern School received this year from our wide circle of friends and supporters. Warmly, Cathleen Pasquariello, M.Ed Head of School 3
  • 6. About Havern School OUR HISTORY Havern School was founded in 1966 by the Sisters of Loretto in Littleton, Colorado. The Sisters recognized that children with learning disabilities can succeed as students when they are provided with the appropriate environment. The Sisters created a specialized curriculum, which along with small class size, encouragement and support, enabled their students to reach their learning potential. Building on this strong foundation, Havern became an independent, secular school governed by a Board of Trustees in 1970. TODAY HAVERN IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED INDEPENDENT SCHOOL. Havern School is a co-educational day school offering programs for students from ages 5 to14. We develop the skills of our students by focusing on their strengths while addressing individual learning challenges. We believe strongly in the ability of every child to learn and we utilize a whole- child approach to reach this goal. 4
  • 7. Fundraising at Havern THERE ARE TWO DISTINCT FUNDRAISING ENTITIES AT HAVERN. Parents for Havern Fundraisers Money raised through Parents for Havern programs is used to enrich the learning environment and foster a sense of community at the school. Havern School Fundraisers Money raised through these Havern School events supports general operating costs and specific projects. Havern School fundraisers include: • The Annual Fund Campaign - Revenue from the Annual Fund campaign is used to supplement the budget for annual operating costs. • The Spring Garden Party - Money raised at this event is used to underwrite specific school improvements. • The “Chip-in-for-Havern” Golf Tournament - 100% of proceeds from the golf tournament is used to provide scholarships for Havern students. 5
  • 8. Annual Fund Tuition covers 80% of the cost of educating a Havern student. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide Havern with unrestricted, expendable resources to help supplement the budget for general operating costs. The goal of this vital fundraiser is to achieve 6 100% participation from the Havern Board of Trustees, staff, and families. No gift is too small to make a difference and to earn our sincere gratitude.
  • 9. Endowment Funds Endowment Funds at Havern Endowment funds are permanent, self- sustaining sources of funding which can be set up to support scholarships or other ongoing needs. These gifts are invested and the annual earnings are used both to support the purpose of the endowment and to build market value. Endowment funds can grow and provide support for Havern programs in perpetuity. Interest/dividend income from the Havern School Endowment is used to fund annual operating expenses. The endowment principal remains intact. Annual Fund gifts provide for the present day; Endowment Fund gifts last forever. 7 Both are essential to the financial health of Havern School.
