Social Networking Sites
Facebook is an online Social networking whose name stems from
the colloquial name for the given to students at the start of the

February 2004 by Mark Zukerberg with his college roommates
and fellow Harvard University students .

online services, including Usenet, ARPANET, LISTSERV and bulletin board
services (BBS).
• The early social networking on the World Wide Web began in the form of
generalized online communities such as Theglobe.com (1995), Geo cites
(1994) and Tripod.com (1995).
MAIN PURPOSE
• The main purpose of these early communities was to focus on bringing
people together to interact with each other through chat rooms and
encouraged users to share personal information and ideas via personal
webpages by providing easy to use publishing tools and free or inexpensive
web space. The class mates communicate via email addresses.
USER PROFILE
• The user profile became a central feature of social networking sites in the
late 1990’s.It allows users to compile a list of “Friends” and search for
other users with similar interests.
• New social networking methods were developed by the end of 1990s.At
this time, many sites began to develop more advanced features for the users
to find and manage the friends.
• The newer generation of social networking began to flourish with the
emergence of SixDegree.com in 1997 followed by Make out club in
2000, Hub Culture and Friendster in 2002 and soon became part of the
internet mainstream.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS
OF SOCIAL NETWORKING
• The social networking sites have risen in popularity over the past few
years. The people have been spending a lot of time on the internet in
general but much more on the social networking sites in specific. This point
is much interesting that all age of people use social networking.
• This has led researchers to debate the establishment of internet addiction as
an actual clinical disorder. The social networking can also affect the extent
to which a person feels lonely.
• Johanna Corn blatt explains in a Newsweek article that social networking
sites like Facebook and MySpace may provide people with a false sense of
connection that ultimately increases loneliness in people who feel alone.

Social Networking Sites
Social Networking Sites
Multitasking
Reduction in real human contact
• The more time the students spend on these social media
sites, the less time they will spend socializing in person with
others. . They will not be able to communicate and socialize
effectively in person with others. The employers are getting
more and more unsatisfied with the communication skills of
the fresh graduates due to this reason.
Reduces command over language and
creative writing skills
• Students mostly use slang words or shortened forms of words
on social networking sites. They start relying on the computer
grammar and spelling check features. When they are much
involved in these social networking they usually lose their
command over language and they usually fall in the problem
of lack of confidence and besides losing their language skills
they also become non-creative and their capabilities of
innovation thinking become low.
Time wastage
• The most use of social media causes the wastage of time.
Although this social media has very advantages but we can say
that this has also many disadvantages. Students, while
searching and studying online, get attracted to using social
media sites and sometimes they forget why they are using
internet they use unconsciously which leads to waste their
time.
Low grades
• In this modern age children are much aware of these social
media items from their childhood and they spend their most
time in using these network which cause many disadvantages in
their future life. They may also suffer some psychological
problems when they get low grades I their academic activities
Students get low grades in school due to lack of the desired
information, lack of creative thinking and writing skills.
Loss of motivation in students:
• When a person use these social networking they think that it is
their life in enjoying the social networking while in real sense it
is not so. The just rely on some theoretical working and when
they come out in their practical life they are less effected than a
person who is mare practical worker this reduces the
motivation of those students.
Effect on health:
• The excessive use of these sites affects the mental as well as physical health.
When people use these social networking they adjacent to it unconsciously.
Health can be maintained by proper food and proper sleeping but
unfortunately students do not care for their health and in the result they got
addicted in many psychological disorders and in this sense students do not
take their meals on time and take proper rest. They take excessive amount
of coffee or tea to remain active and focused which effects negatively on
their health.
