2. What I did and why?
Same with my other two questionnaires, I had asked the same 20
participants on what feel a good, successful magazine review
contains and in what way does it persuade you to actually watch
the main product. I had designed this questionnaire in order to
find what types of magazines my target audience read and to
find out if they ever have read a magazine review. The reason
behind this was so that when it comes to planning and producing
my film review, I will know what content to add and what type of
film reviews to analysis in order to produce a successful film
review. The 20 participants I had asked were students and
teachers within my media class, the reason of this is because
these are the sort of people I plan to target my product at, so in
order to successfully advertise my product and persuade them to
watch my main product, I first need to find out what type of
things they expect to be contained within a film review and what
persuades them.

4. My findings- Do you read
magazines?
Out of the 20
participants 16 of them
18 had said that they read
16 magazines. But 4 of them
had said they don’t. The
14
reason I had asked this
12 question is because I
10 wanted to get a rough
idea of who my film
8 review would be
6 targeting, as well as how
many. Also I wanted to
4 know how successful
2 magazine reviews are as
an advertisement.

5. My findings- What is your
favourite type of magazine?
Regional The reason I had asked the
participants what type of
magazine they prefer is
National because with the last
question being quite vague, I
wanted to get a clearer
Film understanding of how
effective film magazines are

6. My findings- What is it about this type of
magazine that interests you so much?
Of the participants that had said that film magazine were their favourite
type of magazine, had said that the content within film magazines, like
finding out about upcoming films and reading film reviews to find out
which film is worth watching, is what interests them and persuades them
to keep buying film magazines.
5 of the participants who had chosen gossip magazines as their
favourite, had said that they enjoy reading into celebs personal lives and
finding out their gossip.
So this question had allowed me the gather an insight into why people
buy certain magazines, but this question was specifically designed to
find out why people buy film magazines, and with the majority of them
saying its because of film reviews has told me that film reviews are
successful in persuading the audience as they buy film magazines for the
reviews.
7. My findings- Do you ever read film reviews? If
yes, which magazine’s do you read them in?
20 Out of the 20 participants 17 of them
had said that they have read a film
review, even if it was just the once.

The point to these questions was to find out who
popular film reviews are and how successful they
Film
are in persuading their target audience. But also I
wanted to know which film magazines are film
reviews best distributed in . This is in order for me to
know which film magazines to research into, in Out of the 17 participants, 9 had said
order for me to know what makes a successful film the they read it from Empire and 8 of
review.
them had said Total film.
8. My findings- What do you expect to be
written in a film review?
All the participants said that expect to read about the
actors, directors and the narrative/synopsis of the product. Films
reviews are designed to give the audience an insight into what
makes this film so special and makes it a must see film, and this is
done through celebrity endorsement, if a well known or famous
person stars init. So the participants had said that by talking about
the actors within film reviews, is what persuades them to go and
watch the film, along with the critics opinion. So the majority had
also said the critics opinion is a major aspect throughout, and is a
massive persuasion, as most audience members believe that
critics being professional film fanatics they know what they are
talking about, so majority of the audience takes on the advice
given by critics and their for they are successful in persuading the
audience.
9. My findings- Has a film review in a magazine ever
encouraged you to see a film? If yes, can you remember
which film? And which magazine the review came from?
The majority of the participants had said that they have been
influenced by a film review but the films that they were
persuaded into watching varies in genre and cast
members, from Famous action/ fantasy film ‘Avengers’ to
Romantic film ‘The note book’, but the one re-occurring factor
within every participants questionnaire was that, the film review
had came from the two famous film magazines, Empire and Total
Film. But there was one or two participants, that had written that
it wasn’t a film review within a film magazine that persuaded
them to watch the product, but in fact a review on the website
‘Rotten Tomatoes’. This question has allowed me to establish
how film review are in fact a every powerful and persuasive form
of advertisment.
10. Evaluation
If I was to carryout this questionnaire again, I would have made
more open ended question, to get more detailed and opinionative
answers, but most importantly I would have made these questions
centred around asking the audience about online film reviews, as I
feel that my questionnaire was quite restricting, in the sense that I
was specifically talking about magazine reviews. So by restricting
the audience I feel that the Qualitative data that I had received
from my questionnaire, isn’t as accurate in talking about how
successful and persuasive film reviews are, as film reviews are a
massive persuasion online as well. So if I was to do the
Questionnaire again I would talk about online reviews and ask the
audience if magazine reviews are similar to those online, and if they
are not, I would like to know why? (what are the similarities and
differences? And Which one is more persuasive?); in order for me to
get accurate results into what makes a good successful film review.
