Cool Roofs absorb less than 35% of solar energy striking the roof
Compared to “traditional” dark roofs absorbing 70% or more of the solar energy
Results in reduced heat transfer into building, reducing cooling costsTraditional Dark Roof Absorbs 70% more Solar Energy Reflective White Cool Roofs C Can be %0* to 60*F Cooler
A division of the Jones-Blair Corporation Why are Cool Roofs Cool?.................... ,[object Object]
Most “Traditional” dark-colored roofs absorb 70% or more of the solar energy striking them – resulting in peak roof temperatures of 150* to 190* F. ,[object Object], on hot days. ,[object Object], spaces below can decrease cooling costs by 20% on average.
ENERGY STAR® is a government (EPA/DOE) backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Reflectivity Solar Reflectance of a Roof is defined as the percentage of solar energy Reflected by the roof’s surface. NEOGARD® White Roof Coating Membranes are ENERGY STAR® compliant. ,[object Object]

Nearly ½ of all Energy Consumption
15 trillion gallons per year for all potable water
136 million tons of building-related construction and demolition in a single year is generated
Buildings use 40% of all raw materials globally (3 billion tons annually)
$40 billion is spent annually to air condition buildings in the US
Electrical loads are increasing faster than Generating Capacity
Natural Gas & Electrical Costs are increasing
½ of the US population live in Heat Islands
Energy Costs increaseIndirect Costs include: ,[object Object]
Cost of Roofing Materials
Premature Failures
Landfills Filling Up
Extending the life of an existing building by conserving natural resources, qualifies for credit in the Material and Resource category. By using the existing roof, reduction of waste is achieved and applies to further credits within this category. Before After
URBAN HEAT ISLANDS The use of dark, non-reflective surfaces for parking, roofs, walkways and other surfaces contributes to heat island effects created when heat from the sun is absorbed and radiated back to surrounding areas. As a result of heat island effects, ambient temperatures in urban areas can be artificially elevated by more than 10 degrees when compared with surrounding suburban and undeveloped areas. This results in increased cooling loads in the summer, requiring larger HVAC equipment and energy for building operations. Heat island effects can be mitigated through the application of shading and the use of materials that reflect the sun’s heat instead of absorbing it. Heat Island Atlanta 1972 Heat Island Atlanta 1993 Causes: Urban Trees/Grass/Shrubs Reduction (56% of the cause) Dark Roads & Parking Spaces (6%) Buildings with Dark Roof Surfaces (38%) Dark Surface Temps 75* - 100*F Higher than ambient air temperature Increases A/C costs (+$5 BILLION per year) Increases Smog Premature roofing material deterioration Roof Top Effects On Urban Heat Islands Roofs are the hottest urban features 140* to 180*F at peak Roofs cover 20% of land area Difficult to shade large low slope roofs Cool Roofing can make a big impact 100*F to 120*F at peak for cool Roofs 50* drop over 20% of an urban area Note: Computer Simulations project Significant Impact on UHI turning roofs Black to White
SUSTAINABLE/ECONOMICAL ROOFING DIRECT BOND What if there was a way to……….. ,[object Object]
Reduce Energy Consumption by 15% or more?
Reduce Electrical Bills by 20% or more?
Reduce Roof Waste to Landfills by a 1/3 or more?
Protect Membrane, Bitumen, Metal & Concrete Roofs?
Improves bottom line by reducing waste and costs.
Resource and re-use of existing materials
Improves top line by providing new sources of revenues

  • 71. TAX ADVANTAGES According to Sec. 1.162-4 Repairs of IRS Tax Code: Roof maintenance systems are fully tax deductable as an operating expense. One of the key advantages of a restoration system over a new roof system is in how it is classified by the IRS. Restoration is classified as a maintenance, and in most cases it can be expensed in the accounting period it is incurred. On the other hand a new roof system is a capital asset that must be amortized over a 39 year life.
