This is a small presentation showing that the inhabitants of my city/country do not adhere to a lifestyle that promotes sustainable development! Unfortunately we have a long path ahead of us to have a development which is green, eco, and sustainable.

3. What is Sustainable Development?

to meet their own needs.

development in has been fraught with
difficulties and challenges, both external and
internal.
• Lebanon’s path towards sustainable
development was also derailed by regional
factors.

Environmental level:
The Lebanese Government is fully aware that
meeting the country’s water demand will be
very challenging over the medium and long-
term.

Although Lebanon is blessed with the highest
average annual rainfall of any country in the
Middle East (661 mm/year, 2012), water supply
is a serious problem almost everywhere in the
country.

The environmental cost of air pollution in
Lebanon is alarming to the Lebanese
Government.
The impact of air pollution on public health and
the economy cannot be underestimated.

Ambient air in Lebanon is affected by several
Human-polluting activities such as:
Transport
Energy industries
Manufacturing processes
Agriculture
Quarries
Construction activities
Open burning

Socio-Economic level:
Lebanon’s resident population increased by an
estimated 25% (between 1992 and 2012)
From approximately 3.5 million to 4.2 million
(including an estimated 400,000 Palestinian
refugees).

Socio-Economic level:
According to the Ministry of Social Affairs,
Half of the Lebanese population is below
the age of 29.
24% percent of the Lebanese population is
living near or under the poverty line.
