Wild About Roofs RSS News FeedHighly commended at Business Green Awards 2015 - ?Fast Track
Company of the Year?Last night (01/07), Wild About Roofs was awarded highly commended for the
“Fast Track Company of the Year” at the Business Green Awards
2015.

                     The Awards
ceremony took place at the Brewery, Central London and was an improvement from last year where
we were a finalist in the category - "Small Business of the Year". This year 500 people from the
green economy attended the event. With the increase in interest of the Business Green
Awards judges agreed it was the most competitive year so Wild About Roofs is pleased to be
recognized as a key player on the green sector. The “Fast Track Company of the
Year” category was presented by Natalie Bennette, Leader of Green Party of England and
Wales, giving more prestige to the awards.  John Ward, Director and General Manager
of Wild About Roofs,  “It was a great to come back to the Business Green Awards in
2015 and achieving Highly Commended in the Fast Track Company of the Year  after being
nominated in the Small Business of the Year category in 2014. It’s a real boost to the
company for our achievements and hard work”. Wild About Roofs was the only roofing
company that was highly commended at the Business Green Awards which makes the
company stand out from its competition. This honour is proof that the company is going from
strength to strength keeping on track of “bringing nature into the
city”. http://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/Highly_commended_at_Business_Green_Awards

_Green_Awards_2015___Fast_Track_Company_of_the_Year_13008.jpeg2015-07-02 14:31:112The
importance of wild roofs to pollinatorsBees and other pollinators, including butterflies, have been
declining as their habitat and food gradually disappears. We’ve lost 97% of our wild-flower
rich meadows in the countryside since the Second World War due to modern farming practices, and
in towns and cities green spaces have been concreted over to create shopping malls and housing
developments, while gardens and back yards are being decked over to create low maintenance
outside space and car parking spaces. When bees collect pollen and nectar from flowers to
feed themselves and their young, they pollinate the plant so it is able to produce more seeds, fruits,
nuts or berries.  If there are less flowering plants and shrubs and fewer blossoming trees
providing nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies to eat in cities, so there will also be less of these
seeds, fruits, nuts and berries for birds and other wildlife to feed on and the eco-system starts to
collapse. Look over any city and you will see much of it is covered in roof tops. Most of them
are bare bee deserts, providing neither habitat nor forage to bees or other pollinators. But planted
with bee-friendly flowers, they could provide a huge role in increasing biodiversity in towns and
cities by providing havens for pollinators where natural habitats are scarce. Even in an area
like Greater London where 33% of the land is green space, its parks, squares and commons
aren’t joined together making it difficult for pollinators to move from one to another. Tree-
lined streets and flower-rich roofs could provide the stepping stones to link together these
fragmented habitats. And it they host nest boxes, logs and water features, they could provide
important nesting sites as well as feeding stations. Roofs could one day be seen not simply as
structures to keep out the rain but as green, wildlife corridors in the sky. But not every bee-
friendly flower will flourish on a roof. The windy and dry conditions can make it too harsh for many
to survive.  Sedums used to be the plant of choice for roofs;  drought resistant and very
hardy they grew well and attracted a variety of pollinators when they flowered late in the summer.
But research has shown that other flowers can equally attract pollinators on green roofs and will
flower at different times throughout the spring and summer, so providing forage throughout the bee
season. Flowering plants that grow naturally in dry, costal or mountain environments will be
best suited to a green roof. Lavender’s natural habitat is stoney soil in full sun. If grown in
large swathes on a sunny roof, the nectar released by its purple spires during June and July could
attract thousands of bees – honey bees, but more importantly wild bumblebees and solitary
bees -  in search of good, abundant forage. An ideal green corridor for city bees would
be streets planted with Hazel and Alder trees supplying early spring pollen, fruit trees and limes for
early summer food, ivy-clad walls supplying late nectar, and lavender-carpeted  roofs to
provide late summer forge. Together they could provide a key role in helping our pollinators to
flourish in urban environments. This is why Urban Bees has been working closely with Wild About
Roofs and Grosvenor estates to encourage the retrofitting of lavender roofs in central
London.  This article was written by Alison Benjamin, co-founder of Urban
Bees http://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/The_importance_of_wild_roofs_to_pollinators--post--48.

  • 1. Wild About Roofs Wild About Roofshttp://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/ Wild About Roofs RSS News FeedHighly commended at Business Green Awards 2015 - ?Fast Track Company of the Year?Last night (01/07), Wild About Roofs was awarded highly commended for the “Fast Track Company of the Year” at the Business Green Awards 2015.                                                                    The Awards ceremony took place at the Brewery, Central London and was an improvement from last year where we were a finalist in the category - "Small Business of the Year". This year 500 people from the green economy attended the event. With the increase in interest of the Business Green Awards judges agreed it was the most competitive year so Wild About Roofs is pleased to be recognized as a key player on the green sector. The “Fast Track Company of the Year” category was presented by Natalie Bennette, Leader of Green Party of England and Wales, giving more prestige to the awards.  John Ward, Director and General Manager of Wild About Roofs,  “It was a great to come back to the Business Green Awards in 2015 and achieving Highly Commended in the Fast Track Company of the Year  after being nominated in the Small Business of the Year category in 2014. It’s a real boost to the company for our achievements and hard work”. Wild About Roofs was the only roofing company that was highly commended at the Business Green Awards which makes the company stand out from its competition. This honour is proof that the company is going from strength to strength keeping on track of “bringing nature into the city”. http://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/Highly_commended_at_Business_Green_Awards _2015___Fast_Track_Company_of_the_Year--post--49.html 49http://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/userfiles/images/sys/blog_items/Highly_commended_at_Business _Green_Awards_2015___Fast_Track_Company_of_the_Year_13008.jpeg2015-07-02 14:31:112The importance of wild roofs to pollinatorsBees and other pollinators, including butterflies, have been declining as their habitat and food gradually disappears. We’ve lost 97% of our wild-flower rich meadows in the countryside since the Second World War due to modern farming practices, and in towns and cities green spaces have been concreted over to create shopping malls and housing developments, while gardens and back yards are being decked over to create low maintenance outside space and car parking spaces. When bees collect pollen and nectar from flowers to feed themselves and their young, they pollinate the plant so it is able to produce more seeds, fruits, nuts or berries.  If there are less flowering plants and shrubs and fewer blossoming trees providing nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies to eat in cities, so there will also be less of these seeds, fruits, nuts and berries for birds and other wildlife to feed on and the eco-system starts to collapse. Look over any city and you will see much of it is covered in roof tops. Most of them are bare bee deserts, providing neither habitat nor forage to bees or other pollinators. But planted with bee-friendly flowers, they could provide a huge role in increasing biodiversity in towns and cities by providing havens for pollinators where natural habitats are scarce. Even in an area like Greater London where 33% of the land is green space, its parks, squares and commons aren’t joined together making it difficult for pollinators to move from one to another. Tree- lined streets and flower-rich roofs could provide the stepping stones to link together these fragmented habitats. And it they host nest boxes, logs and water features, they could provide important nesting sites as well as feeding stations. Roofs could one day be seen not simply as structures to keep out the rain but as green, wildlife corridors in the sky. But not every bee-
  • 2. friendly flower will flourish on a roof. The windy and dry conditions can make it too harsh for many to survive.  Sedums used to be the plant of choice for roofs;  drought resistant and very hardy they grew well and attracted a variety of pollinators when they flowered late in the summer. But research has shown that other flowers can equally attract pollinators on green roofs and will flower at different times throughout the spring and summer, so providing forage throughout the bee season. Flowering plants that grow naturally in dry, costal or mountain environments will be best suited to a green roof. Lavender’s natural habitat is stoney soil in full sun. If grown in large swathes on a sunny roof, the nectar released by its purple spires during June and July could attract thousands of bees – honey bees, but more importantly wild bumblebees and solitary bees -  in search of good, abundant forage. An ideal green corridor for city bees would be streets planted with Hazel and Alder trees supplying early spring pollen, fruit trees and limes for early summer food, ivy-clad walls supplying late nectar, and lavender-carpeted  roofs to provide late summer forge. Together they could provide a key role in helping our pollinators to flourish in urban environments. This is why Urban Bees has been working closely with Wild About Roofs and Grosvenor estates to encourage the retrofitting of lavender roofs in central London.  This article was written by Alison Benjamin, co-founder of Urban Bees http://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/The_importance_of_wild_roofs_to_pollinators--post--48. html 48http://www.wildaboutroofs.co.uk/userfiles/images/sys/blog_items/_27997.jpeg2015-05-29 15:01:252Official Members of GRO (Green Roof Organisation)Wild About Roofs becomes a member of The Green Roof Organisation (GRO). GRO is the independent UK body representing the industry trade associations, manufacturers and key players within the green roofing sector. For Wild About Roofs becoming part of GRO within only 18 months of existence is a massive achievement. It has been assessed on projects the company has installed, looking at workmanship, quality management and references from the clients.GRO provides suitable guidelines to manufacturers and installers to promote trained green roofing companies. In February 2011 GRO produced the first edition of the Green Roof Code for the UK, that was reviewed on October 2014.
